Used Car Loan – Can I Get a Low Interest Rate Today?
Posted on | September 22, 2009 | No Comments
Getting a used car loan has become much more common lately since the recession has hit all of our wallets. Many car buyers want a low interest rate on their used car loan but is this really possible? Of course it is possible if you take the time and effort to do the research and take the necessary steps to improve your credit score. Most used car loan lenders will be willing to offer you a low interest rate if you prove you are a good borrower of money.
The only way that you can prove that you are a good borrower of money is to have a good credit score. If your credit score is not acceptable, most lenders will punish you by increasing your interest rate. The risk of you defaulting on the loan is being put into place through the interest rate. If you have missed several payments on loans and bills in the past there is no reason to say that you won’t do it again in the very near future.
The opposite is also true. If you have paid all of your bills on time and you have never been late on a payment it is likely that this trend is going to continue. Good borrowers of money are rewarded with a much lower interest rate because loan companies are reassured that you are going to make your payments in full and on time. If you have a credit score of 740 or higher you have proved this over time.
If you have a credit score under 740 then you are not considered a great borrower. This does not mean that you cannot get an acceptable used car loan rate. What is means is that you are going to have to put more money down and actually negotiate your way into the interest rate that you actually want. Some borrowers thrive off this and actually enjoy it greatly while others fear it. Either way, it is going to take research and some extra effort if you do not have a great credit score.
With this being said there are many opportunities out there for you to get a used car loan. Many of these companies are advertising on the Internet and television and they greatly want your business. It would not hurt to give a few of these companies a call just to see what they can offer you. Even if these companies are not in your area, it might still be useful to test your negotiating skills.
