Initial Weekly Unemployment Claims Up to 479,000 But No Tier 5 Unemployment Benefits Extension for 99ers
Posted on | August 5, 2010 | 14 Comments
This morning data came out that showed an increase of 19,000 unemployment claims which pushes the overall number up to 479,000. This is the largest number we have seen since August. With this in mind it totally proves the point against this VERY anti unemployment benefits extension article. After reading the article many of the unemployed will be quite upset as the author seems to have no clue what is happening in the United States at the present time.
With 99ers now outside the numbers and claims still increasing this much it is easy to see that it is nearly impossible to find a job in the current economic environment. The government continues to claim that they are taking the steps to create jobs but this does not seem to be happening. We all know that President Obama has created stimulus for job growth but he cannot force companies to make jobs that are not needed.
Over the next 48 hours it will be very interesting to see how the initial weekly unemployment claims data is analyzed. With this being the largest number since April it may very well be the case that the Senate strongly considers an unemployment benefits extension before recess starting next week.

Harry Reid is too afraid of the Republicans to make them stay in session and approve the New Bill to help 99ers. At least Pelosi has the cajones to call the house back early from vacation. They say after the recess they will vote on it, but they dont realize we 99ers live day to day, holding out hope that maybe the next day will see a bill approved to help, not 6+ W E E K S later, but tomorrow.
August 5th, 2010 @ 1:06 pm
They can take a vacation later. This is an emergency.
Oh my God! Who gets a 6 week vacation? Is this Europe?
August 5th, 2010 @ 4:44 pm
Please President Obama, Make these Senators stay until this passes. Maybe if the Republicans lose vacation time they will just pass the damn thing. This is incredible that any person (dem. or rep.) would have the guts to leave on vacation while people/families in the USA are suffering. To all 99er’s, may God be with you all!!!!

If you are a 99er or someone that has lost your benefits due to the Senate sitting on their hands. You can’t just blame the GOP. Yes they have blocked everything but there is a way to stop them blocking those issues. Senator Stabenow has a new bill for the 99ers but says she won’t offer it until after they go on break. That is what I am talking about, vacation is more important. Pelosi is calling the house back in case the Senate passes a bill for State workers (teachers, police and fireman). So Pelosi is showing toughness but Reid wants his vacation.
To make them (GOP) pass a benefit package for the 99ers and anyone that has lost their benefits the Democrats can force them to not go home until it is done. They also blocked a Small Lending bill for small business from community banks, this was a lending bill to create jobs and didn’t add a dime to the deficit. So that needs passed before one of them goes for over a month vacation. So when I say it just isn’t the GOP it is Harry Reid also he could be tough. If he thought it is more important for those that have lost than those that have allot and are going on vacation.
So flood Harry Reids phone lines and fax machines until he gets the message. If you don’t help then you have no right to complain. Here are the contact numbers:
Washington: Phone # 1-202-224-3542 Fax# 1-202 – 224-7327
Las Vegas: Phone # 1-702-388-5020 Fax# 1-702-388-5030
Carson City: Phone# 1-775-883-7343 Fax# 1-775-883-1980
Reno: Phone# 1-775-686-5770 Fax# 1-775-686-5757
Do not call if you do not have a calling plan that lets you call anywhere in the US without being charged for long distance. Use that money for your family. The rest of us have no excuse to complain then do nothing. Remember they go home for vacation Friday the 6th so call and call and call till then. If he does go on vacation without fixing these issues then flood those state lines more. By the way I am not a 99er but believe they paid their taxes and help build our country and now need our help.

Putting all issues on the side, including the FACT that the unemployed need immediate assistance from Congress… who the hell are these people? Really… another vacation? It’s time we revisited not only who is in there, but the terms… they are and have created this small group of elitists that represent the American People – really? Are they entitled to ROYAL treatment – that is immune to the realities / problems of the America? I do NOT think so! We need change and it starts with here and now. Don’t take this S*** anymore – the country and the people here deserve better, period.

Are you kidding? A vacation, it’s more like a sick leave. Making $174,000 plus bonuses and 6 weeks of vacation at least five times a year and there’s no money for the 99ers? What the heck is this? The people who have no heart or compassion for the 99ers will receive the same ill regards toward their circumstances when they lose their jobs and it will happen. Also, the newly unemployed who complain about the 99ers will soon take on the name of the long term unemployed or 99ers themselves and let’s see what they say then. As for the Senate and Congressman who call us lazy we will say the same to them as we vote them out because what have they done to keep their jobs? We have been without benefits since the beginning of this year and they think that we can wait until those pigs get back from vacation? Their children are jumping around in pools and oceans while ours are crying and starving? Come on America, will you stand by and allow them to treat the ones hit the hardest in this recession (99ers) who have worked to build this nation? We need help too! Their should be no division amond Americans on this one, it is a no brainer. No work, no money: No money, no food. Tier V today, not next month!!!!! We have lost everything here, give us a break.

“These Are Federal Emergency Issues Contact Your Congress & The President Now So They Have To Work Through Aug Break!!!”
Enough is enough! Legal U.S citizens unite! Help take the steps to save our country take our jobs back and stop this illegal immigrant invasion. Support our cause before illegal immigrant criminals have more rights than us. This is our last stand! If other online articles report unemployment is around 20% and there are 310 million in the U.S census reports. Then there is as many as 62 million people in the U.S that are unemployed & are able to work fulltime. Do we have to reach 150 million unemployed before we take action? Also we must take steps to lower local city and state councilmen salaries too they are all robbing & hurting the people they serve. So please read and sign this online petition. “Petition to Reduce the Wages of Congress Men and Women from $174,000 per year to $50,000 per year at “change.org’. ” Link is below!

I am very passionate about the passage of HR 4213 with Tier 5 and the Cobra Premium Assistance Program…I sincerely believe that Washington has failed over 4 Million hard working unemployed fellow Americans. This bill with Tier 5 and the Cobra Premium Assistance Program…was to help the long term unemployed before the Memorial Day vacation. However, it is still being thrown around Pennsylvania Avenue in August….. And now Congress is going to go on “another vacation”. The unemployed are not only black and blue but bloody from being kicked around to the tune of the old Potomac Congressional soft shoe containing lots of spikes….The unemployed cannot accept the unacceptable!!
The unemployed are not a football they are a group of long term faceless citizens who have exhausted all available weeks of unemployment benefits. Some have been without any income since March, (some January and February) and are still unable to find employment. They spend every day sending out resumes and applying for jobs, 90% of the time they don’t even receive an acknowledgement that their resumes and applications were received. There are well over four million of them, and that number continues to grow each week as more people join the plight. The statistics reported by the Department of Labor, are not accurate. They do not include exhaustees, underemployed and people who have given up looking for jobs because they do not have the funds to do so. Lots of them have no health insurance… Many of them have gone through all of their savings, and have had to pay penalties to withdraw their retirement IRA’s in order to try and survive. As a last resort, some are selling their blood to blood banks so they can feed their families. Congress has made the American dream into an American nightmare.
Age discrimination has played a significant role in their not being able to land a job. Most unemployed are in their late 40s, 50s and 60s. That, coupled with being over qualified for any low paying job they apply for is destroying the baby boomer middle class. Lately, there have been temporary agencies that have told them their clients do not want to hire anyone that has been unemployed for a long period of time. Why? For the most part, they say because the workers credit scores are in the sewer. The banks are saying that they are employing people, but clandestinely are only hiring those that have good credit scores. How can an unemployed person have a decent credit score if you have been out of work for two years? They say that they are a risk of stealing from them, but we all know that that is just a bunch of thunder. Nobody can get a bank job until you are thoroughly scrutinized through very strict security. In addition, aren’t they insured? The banks were the ones who had and now still own the majority of this economic problem, and they are still not working to make things better. The American taxpayer gave them their blood money so they should stay in business and they are still pushing their blades deeper into this countries already punctured arteries. What are the unemployed supposed to do?
Congress has bailed out the banks, the automobile manufactures, the AIG Insurance Company and Wall Street, they have sent money to Haiti, they have spent billions on two wars and no one worried about the deficit and the money that was being spent. Now, to help people who elected Washington into office, Congress argues over where the money will come from and forcing many into poverty. The American unemployed want to be recognized as the hard working Americans they once were. Congress has taken away their dignity, their love for their country and the faith they once had for the lawmakers that they voted into office.
This country desperately needs this bill to be passed immediately. The fact that unemployment is at an all-time high; there is a good possibility that without Government help, there will be a double dip recession. Not something we need now or anytime. Nobody wants to be unemployed anywhere in this country. Unemployment is only $22,300 before taxes per year in New York State that is if the person gets the maximum including the extra $25. (This $25 now has been dropped from the bill) Even though it varies in different states, the allocations are hardly a living. There is no financial incentive to stay on unemployment any longer than necessary. There are very few good jobs out there and the people I know positively that do not have a job are trying very hard to find a decent position…How can people concentrate on the duty of seeking work in such a market if they worry they won’t have a roof over their head, a phone that may be disconnected, food for their family or their car to get to the interview while dodging the repossession man… No one needs funds more than all the hardworking Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own and are having such difficulties finding a new job.
Providing Tier 5 and extending the Cobra Premium Assistance Program would benefit those who, despite their best efforts, have been trying to find employment for over two years now. Yes, that’s right – two years. Flipping burgers at McDonald’s is not a job to keep ones head above water, and if this bill is not passed to include Tier 5, we will have three quarters of the population serving burgers to the other quarter of the population. Mathematically that alone cannot work because who is going to buy the burgers?? This would be a very sad commentary for all of us!!! .
Christine Owens, executive director of the National Employment Law Project said today that, according to the Congressional Budget Office, unemployment insurance is the most effective form of economic stimulus, creating $1.93 in GDP for every $1 in benefits. “Our real deficit is a jobs deficit,” she said on a conference call with reporters. “It is urgent that Congress act to restore the extended unemployment and COBRA programs as quickly as possible.”
Our people will not and cannot accept the unacceptable!!!! It’s about time President Obama puts his foot down to preach the riot act on Capital Hill. We must take care of our own first. We need this bill passed immediate with Tier 5 and the Cobra Premium Assistance Program before it is too late!!!!
Sincerely,
A very concerned and worried unemployed American

I created a wikipage entry for 99ers, if any wiki pros would like to add to or improve it using reliable sources and information, so historically this time in history is documented and remembered.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99ers
When I first submitted it, another person in a senior role with wikipedia messaged me asking if it was widespread enough of a term and said he would remove it if there were no sources on the term being used. So I went in and added multiple sources from ABC News to the Washington Post on the term being used. Apparently some people are completely unaware of what’s going on in our world and haven’t even heard about the 99ers. They didn’t even know 1.4 million American families and growing are going through this.

I’m also a 99er. I have two master degrees and a PhD. I was laid off due to overseas outsourcing and its cheaper labor costs. I’m afraid that this recession is going to be much longer lived than anyone is willing to admit. In the past, when the economy hit a slowdown our manufacturing would pull us through, but due to our companies taking their equipment and manufacturing out of the U.S. we no longer have have that industrial safety net. I remember during the “W” regime that the President was always bragging about how many jobs were created because of his fiscal policies. However, when you looked at the types of jobs created they were predominately service industry jobs (fast food, malls, sales, etc.).
I even applied to several fast food places just to have some sort of income (non-governmental) and the answer was the same, “Why would you work here? You’re over-qualified.” I also applied at several universities for a position as a professor…. no positions. Tried again with the public school system…. over-qualified again. I would go back to school to get a degree in something related to finance (since that seems to be a protected industry), but I can’t receive financial help for it because I already have a PhD.(Maybe I’ll try to be an auto mechanic or a tire changer at Discount Tire)
