More Ammo for Unemployment Benefits Extension as Ron Paul Points Out Real Unemployment Rate Could Be Around 20%

Posted on | July 29, 2010 | 14 Comments

When it comes to ammo for the 99ers when seeking an unemployment benefits extension Ron Paul makes some good points.  For quite some time Ron Paul has pointed out that the unemployment rate is likely much higher than we are being told.  Back in February, Paul pointed out that the government claimed that the unemployment rate would not go above 8% if the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, or the stimulus bill, was passed.  The high for the unemployment rate was above 10% and Ron Paul suggests that the real unemployment rate was, and could still be, above 20%.

There are currently over 1.4 million Americans who have exhausted their unemployment of 99 weeks and they are working very hard to prove to Washington that there needs to be some financial relief.  Unfortunately, these cries continue to go unheard as the unemployment extension that was passed earlier this month had no reference to those who have exhausted their resources.

If the unemployment rate is actually higher than the 9.5% reported then it makes it even hard to find a job.  For those who have been looking for over two years it makes perfect sense that the unemployment rate could be higher than the number we are seeing reported.  There are many websites and petitions floating around attempting to pass unemployment insurance extensions for these 99ers but as of July 29th, 2010 there are no bills being pushed on to President Obama’s desk.

We would like to hear your opinion on the current unemployment rate.  Is there any way that the national unemployment rate is truly below 10%?  Should the government pass an extension for those 99ers?

    Of course the rate is higher than the government would have us believe! Some reports I’ve read state that an estimated 30 million Americans are unemployed and 6.5 million are 99er’s!!!
    The 99er’s are being discriminated against! We have been unemployed the longest and will have the hardest time finding work. There are too many things that are not in our favor! Just being unemployed at all let alone almost 2 years. Most 99er’s are 50 and over and that’s another strike against us. Companies want to do a credit check before you are hired…what credit do the 99er’s have after losing everything we have worked for all of our lives and what the hell does a credit score prove about how qualified you are to do the job!!! Now they strip us of our dignity and force us to go on welfare which most of us can only receive food stamps!!! What do you do with food if you don’t have a place to cook it in?!
    God bless us!!!

    The unemployment rate like most all gov’t numbers are skewed to the best interests of the gov’t, The reality is that the real numbers are over 20% .

    all the numbers are being manipulated to suit the needs of the pol’s who don’t give a crap about the people or what happens too them. only 3% difference between the great depression and now !

    If people really wanted to find work, they’d call their congress-critter and ask them to endorse the FairTax Act currently in both the Senate and House. The FairTax Act (by name, not the b.s. flat tax/VAT tax that is going through) would remove all burdens of considering tax implications from employers and would ultimately AND IMMEDIATELY have companies jumping over themselves to bring their headquarters back to the U.S.

    Taxes are a huge waste of resources for corporations, and they don’t even pay taxes, consumers, employees, and shareholders do. However, companies have to spend countless hours and resources wiggling through the IRS tax guidelines for damn near every business decision they make, they have to constantly fund for lobbying in Washington to get favorable tax treatment, and all this comes at the expense of shareholders, customers, and more relevant here, JOBS.

    Not to mention, companies in the US are at a disadvantage in the global marketplace because of our tax system. Eliminate it, make it more favorable to do business from here, and the companies will rush back. It would be in their best interest to do so.

    People can rant and rave about the numbers, but that will fix nothing, rant and rave about pumping money into the economy to resuscitate it, but all that’s going to do is prolong it. Reform (read as: “GET RID OF”) the current income tax system, and the jobs will immediately come home.

    YES, of course the unemployment rate is higher than 9.5%. If you include the ‘discouraged’, under-employed and other workers ‘attached to the job market’ the rate climbs to 16.5%.

    Then, if you add back the 54 million unemployed that were removed from the unemployment calculations under Clinton, the rate climbs to 22%.

    believe me, it’s much higher

    I am 36 years old. Young. Have been working ever since I graduated college in 97. Haven’t been able to find a job in over a year. Its rediculous. There’s more than 5 people to each job. Whoever says 5 to 1 doesn’t know what they are talking about. Try like 100 to 1. People are getting like 3000 resumes per job and most of the people are overqualified. People are job hunting downwards and still not getting interview. Its nutz. I spoke to a buddy of mine in Arizona and he said the same thing. Educated, motivated, and there’s not enough opportunities. We are imploding! Sucks. The govt should just start giving out money ie unemployment to whoever needs it for another tier or two.

    Yes this going to become national tragedy. The unemployment numbers are complete utter non-sense. If you count those that have fallen off unemployment and those that did not qualify in the first place (1099 workers or workers that didn’t qualify quarterly) the numbers would be around 30-40%. These are the numbers that they don’t want Wall Street to know since it would cause widespread panic and sell-off. That is the true numbers but they hide them like the plague. The other skewed number is that I keep hearing the politicians saying that there is only 1 job for every 5 applicants. What a joke! I’m sure all of you know that is complete non-sense also. I recently finally got a call back from a potential employer that I had found online. He told me he had run the ad that morning at 8:00 am and by 11:30 am he had received 213 resumes. He stated that because of that he picked me out of the first 20 for an interview. That is the true numbers. I have 3 more checks left on my fourth tier. After that I don’t know what I will do. I know if I’m still around in November I will vote out as many crooked heartless politicians as I can. I am not holding my breath for tier 5 for I know that it will not pass. Just get ready!
    What happens when 20+ million unemployed people and tens of millions who receive some form of government assistance each month suddenly receive no money? How safe will America be? How angry will people become? Can you imagine long lines of people standing outside Walmart begging for food? Can you imagine being robbed at gun point for groceries as you exit a food store? Can you imagine gangs holding “gated communities” hostage within their gates until their financial demands are met? Can you image hospitals and doctors offices closed because there is no insurance and people cannot pay actual costs? When the government tells a huge number of people they will no longer receive government assistance, what choices will they have for survival? Consider Greece again (even though there has been a temporary respite for Greece by the European Union, the drama is not over – keep an eye on it).

    Sidenote: The illegal immigrants must be finding work. Just another reason to secure the border…

    I hesitate to look to the government to take care of a problem they caused. There are many things they could undo that would help the employment situation.
    * Repeal NAFTA
    * Reduce regulations and taxes
    * Eliminate (or at least lower) the minimum wage
    * The list is way too long to go into here…

    If you are out of work, you may need to:
    * flip burgers or greet people at Walmart
    * retrain yourself for jobs that are available
    *** There will always be openings for over the road truckers and nurses
    * Buy yourself a small acreage and sustain yourself with a garden and livestock
    You are probably thinking I’m being mean spirited, but these are things you will eventually do if you can’t get additional government support. Why did you wait 99 weeks? A couple of months out of work and you should have taken a step back to evaluate your future.
