High yield savings accounts have increased in popularity as Americans seem to be saving more money than they are spending. With this being the case there are opportunities to gain over 4% interest on a checking account in May 2010. Most of these opportunities are in local community banks.

It is very important to note that most of these community banks were require you to have residency in a specific area. If you are not a resident of a specific county or area then you will likely not be able to submit an application for some high yield checking accounts and local community banks.

With this being the case it would be a wise decision to step back and start your research on banks in your area. Rather than looking at a broad spectrum it would be wise to call the bank’s within driving distance and see what interest rates they will offer. You may find that there are many local banks that could offer high interest rates.

It is also very important to note that you will have certain requirements on these high yield checking accounts. Many of the banks require you to use an ATM or debit card in the least 10 times a month and have one electronic transfer into the account at least once a month.
