Save Money Any Way Possible

The Cost of Divorce

Posted on | December 2, 2008 | 2 Comments

After finding out how many times marriage and divorce has been searched on Google in the past few days, I decided to do a little bit of research myself.  As a single young adult, I have no personal experience with marriage and very little experience with divorce as my parents have been married for over 35 years and most of my close friends have parents who have not been divorced.  That being said, there are some important costs to consider when divorce is mentioned.

One of the most important costs that many do not think about is time.  Time is the most valuable commodity that one has on this earth and going through a divorce takes an amazing amount of time.  Getting lawyers, expert advice, tax documents, credit reports, insurance check ups, child support and many other factors legally finalized is a necessity.  If the individuals have full time occupations, getting all of this done can take years.

Emotional stress on the individuals and children are another huge cost of marriage.  It is impossible to place a monetary value on the emotional stress that will occur for children when their parents get divorced.  Luckily I have not had to go through this, but I do know it is something that causes many children to stray from their families at a young age.

Financial costs can ultimately make the individuals loathe each other.  “Money is the root of all evil” is explained perfectly when couples get divorced.  Greed is a dirty thing; especially when a spouse feels they deserve more than their fair share of the money that was once shared in marriage.  Divorce360.com has some great financial tips to help make the divorce process easier in terms of money.

I would like to hear your stories about divorce.  It can be your personal experience, friends or even relatives that have been through the divorce process.  I do not have a great deal of experience with the subject, but I would like to gain some knowledge from your experiences, especially financial related issues.

My parents divorced when I was 12 and I know exactly how divorce can effect a family. Luckily I had parents that always thought of me first so I didn’t have many of the problems that I’ve heard others have gone through.

Firstwivesworld.com has a great social network where women of divorce and those that support them can go and help each other. If you get a chance check it out. Here is the link: http://community.firstwivesworld.com/

I started a group on the site just for Adult Children of Divorce. You have to be a member to join and membership is free. Here is the link to the group: http://community.firstwivesworld.com/?page=groups/view&GRID=2

They also have a great resource section that helps with finance: http://www.firstwivesworld.com/resource_directory/your-finances-and-divorce.htm

Here is also a great section on kids and family: http://www.firstwivesworld.com/resource_directory/kids-family-and-divorce.htm

I hope that helps. This should give you a good start and lots of reading material :)

    All my best,
    Antonio
