Mortgage Interest Rates Today February 17 – Fixed Rates Stable

Posted on | February 17, 2010 | No Comments

Mortgage interest rates today, February 17th, 2010, are stable early today. It is still very early, around 8:30 am eastern, but the 30 year fixed mortgage rate is at 4.8% while the 15 year fixed mortgage rate is at 4.23%. The 5/1 ARM is down to 3.58%. Today we will get some news from the Federal Reserve at 2:00 and that should affect mortgage rates and treasury yields.

For the entire month of February we have seen the 30 year fixed mortgage rate in a tight range between 4.73% and 4.95%. This range continues to tighten each and every week which makes us believe that when we break out of this range we are likely to see some fireworks. We could head much higher or much lower.

Analysts continue to predict higher mortgage interest rates in 2010 but we have yet to see it happen. After hearing some commentary from the Federal Reserve Bank we might get an indicator as to where mortgage rates are headed in the near term but it still looks as if rates are headed higher in the long term.
