Unemployment Benefits Extension – California Could be Hit Hard in 2010

Posted on | December 10, 2009 | 9 Comments

Congress is working hard on the unemployment benefits extension as over 3 million unemployed Americans will lose the unemployment benefits in the first quarter of 2010; California could see 589,000 Americans lose their benefits alone.  Last month President Obama signed an unemployment extension into law but this only covers those who lose their benefits on or before December 31st, 2009.  If your benefits expire after this date then you are out of luck at this point.

Some of the other states that are likely to be hard hit by the expiration of unemployment are Florida, New York, Texas, Illinois, and Michigan.  Ten states are expected to see over 100,000 citizens lose their benefits in the first quarter of 2010.  Recently we have seen improving data as employers only cut 11,000 jobs which is well down from the monthly average of 135,000 job cuts for the previous quarter.  The overall unemployment rate also dropped to 10%.

For those seeking an extension of their unemployment have reason to be hopeful as many member of Congress are working hard to get this bill extended before 2010.  House Majority leader Steny Hoyer and Senator Harry Reid have both acknowledged that Congress must address this issue before the end of 2010.  The issue at hand is that time is running out and they need to get things going before they recess for the Holidays.

I am unemployed in Texas and praying benefits will be extended. But I have another issue related to my unemployment. I am a skill experienced worker and have been considered for many positions but due to my recent credit issues because I have been out of full time work since April 2008, have lost those job possibilities. With millions of Americans out of work, losing their homes etc. What am I to do? Any suggestions?

I don’t know who’s bright idea it was to have employers and insurance companies have the right to check our credit before hiring or giving us insurance but I think it should be outlawed!!!! My credit record has NOTHING to do with how I work!!! What idiots did I vote for that allowed this!!!!!?????

I have poor credit simply because I’ve never bought anything on credit, so it would be a big problem for me if a potential employer checked my credit. I probably haven’t had that happen because I’ve worked for nonprofits in recent years, but I agree that this is an outrageous practice and an unjustified invasion of privacy, and should be outlawed. I will call my congressperson and senators about this, and urge others to do the same.

You are all not alone. A high percentage of the unemployed have bad credit. Unfortunately, I believe Congress is not only ignorant, but stupid as defined by the dictionary and will not see this big economic issue until after their Christmas vacation if they ever do see it. Ha. So, like me, we just have to keep trying to find work despite our credit issues. Me personally, I am looking for work outside the US.

I was too sick to look for work so I did not collect UI for 4 weeks. (I was in the hospital for 10 days) By doing the right thing and not collecting my benefits run out the second week of January! And my credit is shot because I ended up with a $18,000 Hospital bill!(My company “downsized” to the point that they didnt have to offer Cobra)I will survive and continue to move forward.I do hope they can pass hr4183 before the years end!

In the spirit of Christmas, I’d like to thank EDD for the ‘glitches’ in their system and lack of concern to begin correcting them in anticipation of the laws Obama passed. I’d like to thank the EDD for not paying me for several months, causing me to loose my apartment when I couldn’t pay my rent I got thrown out. I’d like to thank the EDD for causing my car to get repossessed, because the kind of Chistmas present I was hoping for was having my only means of transportation to get a job, taken away from me. I’d like to thank the EDD for not paying me even when Obama made it law, so I couldn’t pay my bills and they got sent to collections, so every time I apply for a job and they do a credit check I fail, and they turn me away. Finally, I’d like to thank the EDD for causing my phone to get turned off, because it’s easy to get a job, when employers reviewing my resume call a disconnected phone. I’d like to thank the EDD for doing such a fine job, while I sleep on the hardwood floor of my sisters apartment, walking around, trying to look like a 36 y/o professional applying to jobs, with bad credit, no real transportation, and now no phone. Thank you EDD, and Merry Christmas.

When is EDD going to pay me the 1 week of benefits that was added to the 2nd extension as part of the 20 weeks of new federal extensions approved effective 11-8-09? (1 week added to 2nd extension, 13 weeks for the 3rd extension and 6 weeks for the 4th extension)

The notice that I received from EDD discussed the 13 weeks that I will be receiving for the 3rd extension but does not address AT ALL that 1 week was added to the 2nd extension, which I have not/did not receive since I exhausted ALL my benefits in 08/2009 and only received 13 weeks total for the 2nd extension.

Does anyone have any information on this? Is this another system glitch? I hope that people are paying attention to the details, i.e. those who have exhausted ALL their available benefits prior to 11-8-09 are being gypped 1 week of additional benefits entitled to them!!!

What is going on in this world! What no work, I need a job not a handout. Whats wrong with the system. By the time it was time for me to get benefits it was too late. I have a job but no work, doesn’t make sense huh! If they want me to be an employee, than me pay me. I can’t pay my bills now so my credit is shot and I had excellent credit. Bad credit now, who is going to hire me now.
