Unemployment Benefits Extension Passes House; On to President Obama’s Desk

Posted on | November 5, 2009 | 16 Comments

The unemployment benefits extension, HR 3548, passed in the House of Representatives by a vote of 403-12.  The only step left is for President Obama to sign the bill into law.  This has been a much talked about issue on Washington and main street for quite some time.  Many current unemployed Americans are very happy to see that their benefits will be extended at least 14 weeks.

For states with high unemployment rates, above 8.5%, these individuals will see an additional 20 weeks of benefits.  President Obama is expected to move very quickly to get this law signed.  With the national unemployment rate getting very close to double digits this is something that President Obama has addressed and must continue to address to assist every single American.

Subprime Blogger has been on top of this issue for quite some time.  We began writing about the unemployment benefits extension in mid-October and have had some great conversations about the issue.  Please make sure to return to Subprime Blogger for future news on unemployment as well as all your financial and business news.

Does this mean anyone who has exhausted all the regular and extended benefits will get the full 14 weeks?

Yes, if you already exhausted your benefits and/or previous extension(s), you should qualify for this new extension. Also, I’ve read comments on this blog where people are saying the extension is only good till the end of the year. Not true. Once you qualify, you should get the full benefit – either 14 or 20 weeks depending on the unemployment rate in your state of residence – except if you find a job before the extension runs out.

This bill covers those of us who have exhausted all benefits by the end of ’09. There may be a stipulation for ’10. Can’t imagine what the point in not doing so would be.

My benefits were completely exhausted on 10-07,
does anyone know when this will go into effect in Ohio? Ya know, all the debating they did to all of us without benefits, was another day…week..month without money, with unpaid bills, without groceries.(I’m still too proud to sign up for food stamps)

Did the bill H.R3548 clearly outline from what month of last unemployment benefits will receive the extension?

California website already states that if a person is currently unemployed and has received all their benefits will not receive this extension.

I hope the bill is specific eg. The bill will cover unemployed who lost benefits in August or September of 2009.

Does any one knows what the language of the bill?

Thank you, thank you, thank you, I exhausted my benefit five weeks ago, the country, our President Obama, the senate and legislative have been more than generous toward me receiving the full seventy nine weeks, and i said if I did not receive another dime, the country past employers all have been more than kind, thank you, thank you, thank you.

    toni Nealy,

Where on California website are you getting this info? Because I clearly do not see anything like that.

I think some people are reading too much into who qualifies and who doesn’t. Let me try to make things clear one more time.

If you have exhausted your benefits – including extension(s) – you qualify for this new extension.

If you will exhaust your current benefits – including extension(s) – on or before 12/31/2009, you will qualify for this new extension.

If you will exhaust your current benefits – including extension(s) – on or after 01/01/2010, you will NOT qualify for this new extension. However, there are talks that something is in the works for people who fall in this category.

This new extension is NOT retroactive. What that means is if your benefits ran out prior to 11/08/2009, for example in September, your new benefits won’t be backdated from then. In other words, the clock starts on 11/08/2009 for this new extension. This extension is forward-looking.
