Unemployment Benefits Extension – 14 or 20 More Weeks of Benefits for the Unemployed?

UPDATE: Unemployment Benefits Extension Passes 87-13 in the Senate
The current talk of an unemployment extension has been a hot topic in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Harry Raid has created a deadline of October 27th to come to terms with the extension of the first time home buyer tax credit and unemployment benefits or he is going to bring the unemployment benefit extension bill to the Senate as a stand alone bill.
If we see the unemployment benefit extension pass in the Senate as a stand alone bill there is a good chance that it will go through the House very easily within one day. If the bills comes in a partnership with the home buyer tax credit then we could see the House adjust the details which is likely to further the delays on getting these benefits signed into law.
The first time home buyer tax credit extension has gotten hung up several times because of the cost issue but it looks as if progress is finally being made. Several government officials have stated that the tax benefit as well as an unemployment extension “could” be signed into law by the end of this week. It will be very interesting to see if this is a bumpy ride or smooth sailing.

I have to laugh at some of the comments I have read on the blogs.. The GOP this ,.the GOP that… Why doesnt Reid give the Cons the things they want and pass the bill ( if your welfare was the bain of his existence)? Dems are just as obstructive.. And I will would lay odds that the majority of the posters on this blog voted for Obama …So all you the noise your making is just a confirmation ,that the bulk of you have nothing more than a strong case of VD…Verbal Diarrhea …5.30PM CSPAN-2 for the dog and pony show

just more republican rambling. if there ok, thats all that there worried about. That is why the country is so screwed up now. As people dont seem to care about other people. That will be are downfall. Lots of people including myself have lost there home, job, etc. Unfortunately I am in need of assistance. I have worked every day of my life since I was about 8 in one way or the other. I was laid off august of last year, I have a CCNA, I am a very technical person, worked for proctor & gamble, worked for datacard. All big companies. I am unable to find work and have been looking hard, as well as I am in an accellerated IT program to try and get some more rounding in the IT Field. But yet I am still having a problem finding a job that can pay my bills to live, which aint much since I lost my house and went bankrupt. Believe you me, unemployment isn’t that much and I would much rather be off of it. Republicans are holding this up, plain and simple. they want to attach other things that normally would not pass. Crooks as usual. Holding people hostage. This is backfiring on the republicans and they will figure it out the hard way.

The Dems are also at fault for this being stalled. The first time the GOP voiced their objections after the call for unanimous consent, the Dems should have rammed their majority down the throats of the GOP.
You can be sure that had the roles been reversed that the GOP would have done that in a New York Minute.

It’s ironic how a party that has screwed up and wasted so much money by warmongering, stealing money (tax evasion for corp. and wealthy) from the government and wasting funds on a war based on a lie, is so bent on scaling back spending as if all of a sudden hey have been fiscally conservative all along. During Cheney’s reign the Repugs never mentioned anything about reducing the deficit and now they want to re-write history as conservatives, it’s so laughable. Every day I watch the Repugs I see how much they hate this country and how they intend to destroy it if they can’t have their way. It’s wonderful to see how their party is falling apart because of their deceitful ways filled with hate.

Anyone smell a corporate government?
Lets see… seems as if the government can’t pass any bill that extends financial assistance without trying to put more money in the hands of corporations. They pump billions into the likes of companies like Bank of America and other financial relics so fast that tax payers aka real americans don’t even have a chance to see it less approve of it… and now both the Democrates and Rebulicans are working together to stall the unemployment extensions just so they can both pass some more funds to banks for the so called “first time home buyer tax credit extension” which is verbal garbage for giving more money to banks!!! The american people aren’t stupid and we know the dem’s and gop’s are working together trying to pass the breathing tax and carbon tax bill in which Dems & Reps will benefit directly from through corporate enrichment. Open your eyes america when you see the government putting more attention on corporations than on the people… theres a problem… we can fix it… support H.R.1207 – Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009.

I’m Country Carl the Artist and Advocate for additional unemployment benefits. CURRENTLY the GOP is holding us hostage on the extension bill over funding issues and have added several extortion amendments. Your story clearly highlights this jobless disaster. We need NOW to contact our Senators and all the US Senators on Unemployment-Gone-Mad.com,( http://unemployment-gone-mad.com/ ) to realize additional benefits during these NEW DEPRESSION BLUES times(Forget Mitch McConnell R/Kentucky his attitude is “LET THEM EAT CAKE”). Otherwise thousands more will become dumpster divers, tent pitchers and street corner beggars. It’s NOW up to the US SENATE and the rest of Us to get this done.
October 27th, 2009 @ 9:48 am
STOP THE REPUBLICANS NOW !! LET THE PEOPLE KNOW WHEN THEY ARE VOTING ON TUESDAY THAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY SAYS THE PEOPLE AREN’T LOOKING FOR JOBS BECAUSE OF THE EXTENDSIONS. WHAT WORLD ARE THEY LIVING IN..THE DEM’S WANT THE EXTENDSIONS TO PASS THE REPUBLICANS DON’T WANT ANYTHING TO PAST …LET’S GET THIS ON ALL THE NEWS STATIONS NOW AND LET THE PUBLIC KNOW…..
October 27th, 2009 @ 10:34 am
I have voted republican since Reagan/Bush, have even voted republican on the local level but that all changed with Sen. Kyl’s objection to this bill and his objection to myself and my family surviving.
October 27th, 2009 @ 11:24 am
We will be voting in November. and we will remember

Pigs at the trough only care about themselves. No different with ensconced political bureaucrats than Wall Street. This two-party system of government is run by special interests and is mocked by the social democracies of Europe using coalition governments. The US is in dire need of a third party to represent common sense and curb defense spending on senseless wars we can’t afford. This country just gave $6.5 billion to Pakistan, and stumbles over $2.4 billion unemployment benefits to its own people suffering. How can the US be a leader when it can’t take care of its own people?
October 27th, 2009 @ 11:59 am
Yes I agree your post is NONSENSE! Didnt this all start under your friend George Jr? It is nice to see that you can read, now learn to understand!
October 27th, 2009 @ 12:27 pm
dan, ur grammar and spelling are atrocious!
October 27th, 2009 @ 12:42 pm
Again, I have to ask, what the housing tax credit has to do with unemployment extension??? This extension was originally (by the House dems) supposed to be EMERGENCY relief. How has the EMERGENCY part been left out by the senate? Why wasn’t this introduced as its own bill from the beginning?
Senate dems and republicans both have lost sight of the real issue. Hundreds of thousands of their constituents have received their last check and have NO INCOME and no hope for any in this bleak job market.
I received my last check September 5th and need to pay my bills and EAT!! We are starving Senate get this done now!!!
October 27th, 2009 @ 1:21 pm
Its not about Republicans or Democrats, its about people who have been hurt by the past actions of BOTH Republicans and Democrats who need help.
It was BOTH Republicans and Democrats that passed legislation giving the banks and big corporations money instead of home owners in a couple of legislative bills now. Do you realize that every single American family could have paid their mortgage in full by now if all of those trillions of dollars had been given to them instead of the corporate friends of the Democrats and the Republicans?
Stop the left-right paradigm, become an individual American, and think for yourself.
October 27th, 2009 @ 1:43 pm
You assholes are single handedly ruining this economy! I wonder what is on your dinner table tonight!
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:11 pm
Thanks for nothing Senate. I have no food and can’t pay my mortgage. Hope you good for nothings are happy you have a nice hot meal to go home to and gas in your car and don’t have to worry about bills. You make me sick.
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:23 pm
This is getting ridiculous. God, I hope this unemployment extension comes to the floor tomorrow as a stand-alone bill. I HATE not working. I am nearing 40, and for the first time in my life since my teens I am not working. I have always taken care of myself and paid my taxes, but it is BAD in Ohio right now. No joke. I have sent out close to 90 resumes in the past year, and had two people call me for an interview. Neither hired me. It is bad news here, and it is about time that the people in charge started worrying about us here at home. Frankly, I don’t care about the rest of the world when I am struggling to put food on my table. Call me what you will, but we need to invest in ourselves for a while instead of making sure the rest of the world is doing alright. Unemployment here is close to 11%, and I don’t see how it will get any better. I am lucky, in that I don’t have kids to feed. I have already lost my house, so that is a non-issue. But there are families who need this unemployment to keep their families alive, and God help them. I have been able to scrape by with the help of close family, but there are thousands out there that don’t have that luxury. PLEASE stop with the BS and get some help for American people. It is about damn time that we come first.
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:27 pm
Dems this… GOP that… I guess everyone needs someone to blame. It must feel good to be on the winning side?! Only, there is no winning side in this issue (or this economy)! They’ve sold the farm to their lobbyist banker and bussinessmen friends and given almost all our money to them! If this was the old west they would all have buckshot in their asses… Please stop being their pansy side taking assholes… Wake the F— up and retake our once great nation from the liars that care very little for us… We should oust them all and vote via remote ballot on every issue and begin a true democracy!!! If that scares you then you are doing something aprehensible and must also be profitting from using your fellow countrymen…
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:27 pm
Don’t sensor my words!!!
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:29 pm
If the Senate needed to give money to the rich it would pass in a second. But if the American people need a few crumbs to live like unmeployment, then there’s a debate. That’s RNC!!! Keep arguing. The Wall Street guys wouldn’t have to wait!!!
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:36 pm
they are ALL liars, theives, criminals, backstabers, full of crap, idiots, old, crooked, white guys that think it is 1959. all should be voted out
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:37 pm
Everybody needs to remember that the democrats claimed that they didn’t need the GOP to pass anything, if that’s the case then i ask you what is the real reason that this bill hasn’t been presented and passed by the house.
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:38 pm
The bill is up for vote right now, on cspan2 5:37pm
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:56 pm
There is a lot of Republican that are out of work as well so this should not be about DEM or Republicans its about people trying to survive. I pay my taxes like everyone else and I’m still having a hard time finding work so just because you are working this is not WELFARE…And I’m truly offended to here people talk like that I have college degree and tons of work experience and Still unemployed for the first time in 16 yrs..
October 27th, 2009 @ 2:58 pm
I think that as the general public we should all be ashamed of ourselves and our government. We the People are the ones who elected these officials!! We the People know just how corrupt our government has become yet we continue to add to the problem instead of being a part of the solution. Instead of sitting on a blog yelling and arguing over who is to blame, why don’t we all get off our butts and make some changes. This is still our country with over 300 million legal residents living here. Why does’t “the majority” of the people who legally live here do what is best for everyone in our country and stop making excuses (good or bad) for the handfull of people that we elected. We allowed this to happen in our country and now it is time we do something about it.
October 27th, 2009 @ 3:29 pm
It has passed finally!
86 ayes, 13 nays
October 27th, 2009 @ 3:41 pm
Lets all move into the White House and let the government take care of each one of us hey we pay their salary.
October 27th, 2009 @ 4:01 pm
Why are Unemployment Benefits and first time home buyer tax credit extensions being discussed together at all? Most people who are anxiously awaiting an extension of unemployment benefits don’t give a damn about first time home buyer tax credit extensions. Most of us are struggling to hang on to the home we have!
October 27th, 2009 @ 4:53 pm
It passed now let’s see what happens.
October 27th, 2009 @ 5:00 pm
You’re all so misled. If Obama wanted this bill passed, he would have put it on the forefront. The government is playing games with honest people who voted them in. Read between the lines and wake up. It’s easier to collect welfare, receive good medical benifits, and food stamps in this country if you say you don’t know who the father is and don’t have a job.
It’s so sad to see so many well-meaning people who need moral support and a small income to survive.
Our government should be helping the unemployed (who want to work). It’s not a free ride like many on welfare, food stamps, and Medicare.
Maybe if the gov cleaned up the abuse by these people, there would enough money to help those who actually worked for a living.
Take your blinders off for once!
October 27th, 2009 @ 5:58 pm
It’s about time both parties came together and passed the extension package. With the holidays coming up that’s all we need is more senseless acts of depression. It’ll be a dark season for them as it is. At least give them back what they have honestly put into the system.
As far as Medicare and other government assistance, those are benefits that these unfortunate have already paid their hard earned dollars into. Unemployment insurance (yes, it’s insurance benefits) won’t replace the lost job perks. Most who want to work have a hard time as it is to try and secure new employment. They are the real victims caught between the companies that won’t open their payroll, the banks who are finally starting to lend again, and the political cronies who are jockeying for votes in next year’s election. Shame on them – they all suck!
October 27th, 2009 @ 6:08 pm
When are u people going to stop bickering over parties and realize the problem is politicians as a whole. Both sides are holding this up. The GOP to add their amendments, and the Dems to pass Firsttime Homeowner Tax credit. These politicians prey on the citizens bias to one side or the other and use you for their advantage. We as a people, not as a party, need to do our part to change the things we want changed, and not let the politicians decide for us
October 27th, 2009 @ 6:33 pm
I agree with you!
Please help people understand that medicare is the government contribution which working people paid into as a benifit once they retire.
Medicaid is the free ride. Statistics show these benifits are used by people who have learned how to use the system.
I don’t want to see the true needy go without, just stop those abusing and living off the Medicare system.
I know, my neighbor does it and admiltted to it.
October 27th, 2009 @ 6:42 pm
ps ..people on Medicaid typically don’t have a job, and might never have had a job.
October 27th, 2009 @ 6:47 pm
When are all you complainers going to realize that you no one to complain to? You have been disenfranchised! Yes, the Bushman is ultimately responsible for all this, but do you think he gave a damn about YOU?? He had his meetings behind closed doors and they came up with a plan to fool you with their claim of WMDs in Iraq, and at the time the Bushman’s own State Dept., CIA, and the chief of the UN inspectors were telling him “it just ain’t so Joe, ah, George.” Bush TRIPLED the national debt to $14 trillion. You think he cares?? This country will need decades of surpluses to overcome that debt, and we have had only ONE surplus (Clinton) since Eisenhower! These political parties are so entrenched that a third party will never emerge from the embryonic stages. The money is backed by special interests who want a “winner” to represent THEM, not YOU. Until all of us march on Washington and somehow form a party for the people with a guy like Ross Perot as the leader, focused on monetary restraint and taking care of our own, then nothing short of revolution will change this political system. God help us all.
October 28th, 2009 @ 7:00 am
On Unemployment Extensions of Benefits, the Senate passed a cloture vote, 87-13 last night. Here are the Republicans who voted against cloture. with their state’s official (U3) unemployment rates in brackets:
Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) [6.8%]
Sen. Christopher Bond (R-MO) [9.5%]
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) [10.9%]
Sen. Thomas Coburn (R-OK) [6.7%]
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) [8.2%]
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) [11.6%]
Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY) [6.8%]
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) [11.6%]

Sen. Jefferson Sessions (R-AL) [10.7%]

Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) [9.2%]
If you live in their states, you can perhaps make them unemployed.
October 29th, 2009 @ 10:44 am
The Senators are a complete disgrace!! I ran out of benefits three weeks ago. Can’t pay the rent this week. I look everyday for work. It’s useless.
And these morons in government are calling this a “jobless recovery”. An oximoron by a bunch of useless morons. This bill should have been passed as soon as they returned from there five week vacation after labor day!
They are a disgrace, the whole lot of them!!
October 30th, 2009 @ 11:22 am
The problem isn’t the senate, it’s how we elect and the elected term of the senate.
Senators hould be held to a term of no more the 4 yrs and no more then 2 terms just as the president. This would allow new minds into the mix avoiding Senators becoming fixed on a certain mind set. If something doesn’t change in this country the american people will have to exercise thier right and abolish this government and start fresh.
October 31st, 2009 @ 1:45 am
At least we are not eating horses, not that we ever would, thank God. I’m Country Carl the Artist and Advocate for additional unemployment benefits on Unemployment-Gone-Mad dot com. Here in Nashville the pawn shops are the only ones mining gold. These New Depression Blues times can drag a good man to the bottle. As we wait for an unemployment extension, thousands more become dumpster divers, tentpitchers and street corner beggars. Even pets are becoming a burden for
tearful owners and freaking out when they become abandon.
November 4th, 2009 @ 11:06 am
JIM DEMINT(SC) was the only 1 to vote nay.
Remember that name Y’all.
