Unemployment Benefits Extension Vote Today July 20, 2010 – Senate Needs 60 Votes
Posted on | July 20, 2010 | 14 Comments
With the unemployment benefits extension bill being voted on again today, July 20, 2010, it will likely be a very popular topic on many major media networks. The previous two times this issue was brought up the Senate rejected the proposal as many Republicans feel that the Government has already spent too much on unemployment.
There are several sources reporting that there is a very strong chance that the Senate will get the 60 votes it needs to push the bill to the House and then on to the desk of the president. With President Obama adamant about passing this bill there is absolutely no doubt that he will sign it into effect as soon as it hits his desk.
With millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet this unemployment benefits extension has been a very hot topic. Those who are unemployed and have been searching for a job are in desperate need for money to survive and hopefully save their homes. Some of the individuals who have continued to work through the troubling times feel that enabling these individuals will only lead to more problems in the future.
No matter what your opinion, it is likely that the unemployment benefits extension proposal will pass today on July 20, 2010 and President Obama will sign it in the very near future.

Mr. President, I cannot believe Americans would buy that you will be the saving saint for UI extension benefit recipients with your empowered speech yesterday berating the Republicans for not passing the extension until now. We are not dupes, Mr. President, or – should I say – I am not. You timed this speech perfectly as you were taught, I am sure, in oratory class. Timing is of the essense. You aimed your speech at a target that was two inches in front of you. Shame on you!! You KNEW the UI extension was going to pass today and you just HAD to make sure America thought you were the reason – at least those Americans who hadn’t been following the news the last few months might buy it – I hope we as a country are smarter than that. I knew as soon as Sen. Byrd was replaced, the measure would pass and so did you. And shame on you, Americans, who decide to put the mighty orator into office one more time to give us more of his moving speeches on the labored heels of the American workers.

For those who think they are enabling us unemployed think again. I would rather be working than filining out applications and going for interview after interview just not to hear anything. Unemploymnet does not touch the amount us unemployed could make working. We are living week to week. I have been looking for almost 2 yrs here in NC and only had 2 temp. jobs that lasted about 8 months. Now they don’t even have work for me. So think before you speak you have no idea what we have lost and how we worry week to week if we can pay our bills and feed our children.

This is ridiculous that this has taken this long. I have NEVER had a problem getting a job. I spend 3-5 hours daily searching and the interviews I do get I hear “Your Overqualified”. I WANT TO WORK. I also would love to eat, something I haven’t been able to do since my unemployment stopped. Soon my car will be repossessed because I can’t pay it hence I will not be able to keep going on interviews. SO TO THE ALL OF THE NAYSAYER’S THAT BELIEVE THAT WE UNEMPLOYED WORKERS ARE JUST SITTING ON OUR REARS COLLECTING FREE MONEY – YOU KNOW WHERE YOU CAN GO… ALSO TO ALL OF YOU REPUBLICANS – DON’T EXPECT MY VOTE COME NOVEMBER!

The Senate is only voting on an extension of time to apply for one of the fisrt four tier of extensions. This will affect 2.5 million Americans.
But what about the 4 million Americans that are going homeless because they cannot find a job, have exhausted their 4th tier extension back in either February or March (depending on what State a person lives in), and the President & the entire Senate refuse to even acknowledge their critical need of a 5th tier extension??
What a disgrace!!
No-one, not the liberal press, the conservative radio talk shows, or any media news outlet says anything about this crisis in America.
If four million people were going homeless in some foreign land there would be all types of politicians, movie stars, rock stars, etc.. speaking up!!
Sean Penn would be flying there to protest any lack in US assistance, Sheryll Crow would be putting on free concerts to make the public aware, there would be commercials on TV asking for donations, ETC…
but because it’s happening in the US, NO-ONE says a word!!
but November is only 3 1/2 months away and all these useless and disgraceful politicians will be voted out of office by all the Americans that they turned their backs on!!

This is to all of you who say this will “enable” the unemployed people of America. Shame on you! When we stop caring about the starving and homeless people in our own country, and give up billions of dollars to the wealthy and banks to bail them out, we are in serious trouble. That is not a country that I thought I was part of. I am a full time student and mother of 2, and my husband is a hard working father who has been laid off. He has diligently searched and is still searching for a job, and there is NOBODY hiring in our area for a diesel mechanic. He served this country for 5 and a half years in the Navy Seabees, and for all of you who say we do not deserve the help, you have no idea what you are talking about. We are about to lose our home, and there is nothing we can do about it. SHAME ON YOU for not caring about your fellow Americans. It just shows how selfish you are.

But who really cares if FOUR MILLION AMERICANS are going HOMELESS??
Just as long as Michelle Obama keeps giving everyone lectures on what foods we should be eating, I quess everything will be just fine!!
What a bleeping disgrace!!
July 20th, 2010 @ 12:48 pm
Republicans need to stop being republicans and Democrats need to stop being democrats and everyone need to start being AMERICANS!!!

See the writing on the wall..this is much deeper than unemployment benefits…it is part of the overall plan to eventually have everyone dependent on the government …there will be only the jobs the government provides…it is called socialism and we are well on our way to getting there…my daughter and my grandkids are barely getting by on unemployment so I understand the plight of those on benefits and I pray they will vote yes today. I grieve for what is happening to the United States of America.

I was laid off in March of 2009 from a job I had for 7 years, the entire company was laid off and closed its doors. Before that my previous job was for 8 years and all the way back to 1975 I have ALWAYS worked. In all of those years the only time I was ever unemployed was for 4 months back in early 1994. I am disabled but still able to work and never wanted any handout as long as my mind is still aboe to work I want to remain a useful member of society. Ironically today is 16 months of being unemployed. I have been on EB for two weeks now. I live in NC and had collected a total of 64 weeks before the EB started 2 weeks ago so I have now gotten 66 weeks total. I have applied for well over 650 jobs in an area that has hardly anything. Certainly nothing you could live on. Min wage in NC is $7.25 hr and almost every one of those jobs is min wage or slightly above and part time. Too many part time hours to work a second job but not enough that they have to offer any health benefits. This is the latest “trick” the employers are getting away with apparently. How can you work a second part time job when your first one is 32 hours and they wont hire you if you dont work for them exclusively? It all makes me sick. Anyway with over 650 applications and resumes sent and I have had a total of 4 interviews and virtually NO RESPONSE to the majority of my applications. Is common courtesy completely gone in this country?? Many of the applications take at least an hour to complete and for the government jobs they can take several hours…and they dont even bother to acknowledge reciept?? If you go to anywhere that is a decent size company they tell you that you HAVE to apply online- they wont take applications at the business. Is this so they can just anonomously reject you without feeling any guilt?? I WANT TO WORK, but I will lose everything I have worked for all of these years if I have to take a min wage job at 53 years old. My house will be gone in a matter of months, my car even sooner. I did NOT live beyond my means and I do not have any frivulous toys. My savings was wiped out within 8 months and I started to sell anything we had of value…I am sure many of you are doing the same thing. We are not looking for a handout- we worked for many many years and never collected a dime of unemployment. For those of you that look down on the unemployed just try walking in our shoes. Losing your job due to a company closing and not a job in sight that can even keep food on the table and the lights on. We are in serious trouble and I pray to God that the employers will realize soon that we need jobs and they need to hire people if they ever plan to grow their business. Rant over but I am still so disgusted

I have been unemployed for most of the last three years,Primaeily because of the law passed in Michigan tha says you can be fired or dismissed “at will” meaning the companies do not have to supply a reason to justify firing or laying you off. they can do it “at will”. I was working as a direct care worker, was asked to do something that was a recipient rights violation by the manager, and was fired when I refused to do so.The unemployment office said they had no justifiable reason for firing me so I got my unemployment, however it did not get me my job back and every time an employer looks at my resume where I was firedand they just put mine aside. I went to the labor board, but by the time they got around to checking it out they said they only went back to august of that year and I was fired in feburary so if I wanted to do anything I would have to get a lawyer-how,when I am on unemployment and can not even pay all my regular bills. I never missed a day of work in all the time I worked for them and even came in to cover others shifts when asked to and this is what I got for doing my job right.
