Obama Pushes Emergency Unemployment Benefits Extension – Insurance Vote by Senate on July 20
Posted on | July 19, 2010 | 11 Comments
Today, president Obama is pushing for an emergency unemployment benefits extension during a speech at the Rose Garden. The president feels that the unemployment insurance benefits vote should pass in the Senate on July 20th as it has been turned away three times over the last several weeks.
With the unemployment rate over 9% many feel that an emergency relief for those unemployed is the right thing to do. Unfortunately, this is an issue that will remain bipartisan until the end of time as one side feels that 98 weeks is way to long to sit on unemployment while the other side feels as if there are no jobs available.
Over the last few weeks many unemployed Americans continue to search the keyword phrase “unemployment benefits extension.” While it is smart to educate oneself on an issue it has to come into question as to how long it takes to actually find a job. An extremely sad illustration is the Google Insights for Search chart comparing “unemployment extension” to “job search.” Over the last six months the chart of searches for job search continues to decline while the searches for unemployment extension explode higher. Does this portray the truth about those who are unemployed?

Do you honestly think I want to make 345.00 a week when I am used to around 700.00? Thanks to Wall Street and Big lenders…who had to be bail-out by the way…America finds the pursestrings much tighter. Those of us who have yet to find the jobs that sustain us pray for a taste of relief….its the trickle down effect in reverse. Employers are now using the unemployment rate as a tool to give a fair wage. They know we need to work and they have it, just dont expect much pay for it…Vultures

Do you really think 15 million people only look for jobs on google using the search term “job search”??? The comparision of “unemployment extension” to “job search” is the most insane argument I have ever heard to gauge whether people are taking advantage of unemployment and not looking for employment. I have 6 different websites I go to to look for national and local job listings, 3 churches I check for career groups and fairs, and countless other search phrases I use and so many direct companies I check for job listings on their corporate site as well and contacting them directly. If you think we are just going to google and typing “job search” to look for a job you are as disconnected from reality as the senators that vote no. You should lose your job as a writer for this article. I heard if you go to google and type “meth” or “weed” that’s a good gauge to see how many people are on drugs!!!

Not to mention for every job that comes available, 100+ people send in applications or resumes within an hour of the posting. Try to compete with those odds.

Most people waiting on the extension have not been on unemployment for the 99 weeks. They are somewhere in the middle. A lot have only exhausted their regular 26 weeks and most are somewhere in the middle on tier 1, 2 or 3 which puts people between 27-99 weeks when the benefits were cut off at the end of May. You make is sound like there are 15 million people that have taken their 330 a week for 99 weeks and want more because they are lazy when in reality they have taken a huge loss, can barely survive and have only been on unemployment between 6 months-1 year. Have some compassion instead of twisting the facts to promote your self-righteous agenda!

Who googles the term “job search” when looking for a job? Job seekers use Monster or Hot jobs or media bistro or Idealist or use a recruiter. This is a ridiculously obvious example of fudged statics. Of course people aren’t googling, “job search”. Try checking to see how many applications the average unemployed American to any one of these sites and I guarantee the number will far surpass the amount of time they’ve search for updates on unemployment extension. However, I’m certain the that unemployed are checking for updates. When you have creditors calling and management companies threatening eviction you of course the unemployed are going to hope, pray that they will get a check before the end up on the street.
I’m lucky enough to be employed during this awful economic crisis and as one who has a job I can not understand how anyone could treat their fellow Americans this way. It disgusts me. Well…happy Monday all!

People’s attitudes toward each other suck! This is one of the many obvious examples of someone being against their fellow americans instead of united. No compassion, just envy and selfish ambition. Self-righteous disconnected hateful privledged chumps!

You are for helping Corporations and Wall Street with all the money that has put this nation in this tough economic time, reward then with stimulus money for outsourcing jobs to India and other overseas venues. This takes jobs away from the American People I Know I was laid-off because my job was outsourced to INDIA ALONG WITH 1/3 OF THE WORKFORCE AT MY COMPANY. I have a Masters Degree and multiple Certifications in my field so when I do get an interview they say I’m over qualified but what they mean is ” you’re disabled, old, and we would have to pay you, we can hire younger and pay minimum wage. Is this fair we are the ones suffering with no jobs, no money , and the State Senators We voted for turning their backs on us. As they sat with your families
many of us especially myself a disabled Veteran, a single parent with a special needs child that I am raising wondering when I will not have a roof over my sons head, Food for him to eat, basic needs of all humans. The national average is over 9% and Congress would rather fight each other than help their own. Mind you if something happens to another country you will find money to help them but you can’t help your own. What does that say to the other countries in this world. Let another earthquake hit or a hurricane devastate another country and see how fast you send money to help them. I’m all for helping the less fortunate but look around the less fortunate is right here in your own back yard. Sorry if I sound so bitter but I’m a concerned parent my son deserves better.

I primarily apply for jobs in person. I am motivated enough to dress for work, spend extra time and gas to hopefully make an in person introduction to gain the edge to attain a job. All news channels aren’t 100% unemployment update channels, so I search for updates a lot at night (because my house is at stake)! I’m sure there are many people like me, and for you to assume an internet search stat is stereotypical, to say the LEAST! I tried online job searches, and they were a waste of time! You have to find the company who is hiring (where you see yourself as a fit), an apply directly via their corp. website or in person. Take that into account before labeling me a crook! Argh!

Before I make my statement, I just want to let the government officials that think they know everything about the unemployed to know that not all of us enjoy being unemployed. I would rather have a job that pays my bills instead of earning the little 225 a week that I receive. And I say earned because I worked and paid into my unemployment insurance at my previous job just like everyone else did. Where do all my taxes go that are paid if not to help the unemployed. I have child support that I have to pay and unfortunately the unemployement does not cover all of it. I have finally found a job that will work with my schedule, seeing as I am a single mother and a full time student. Just because people are looking for emergency benefits does not mean that we are not looking for work too or doing other things to improve our way of life. I would like to see the politicians come down to my “level”, work a full time job, take care of two boys of my own plus babysit for two others, and go to school full time. They would all give up after a week.

Seriously Jesse Wojdylo? You think that people that have been searching for work for weeks, months or even longer are going to go to google and type in Job Search every time they want to look for a job? No. They might do it one time and find the sites they need then either subscribe and post a profile or bookmark the sites to return straight back to them. Honestly if that’s your best argument then maybe YOU should be unemployed.
