UPDATE: Unemployment Benefits Extension Passes in the Senate, 98-0

We have had a great response to the new website Unemployed and Trying.  If you would like to submit a story or reason as to why unemployment benefits should be extended please email them to jwojdylo@subprimeblogger.com.  We will gladly post them on the new site.  Please make the comments free of profanity or any direct insults.

Unemployment Benefits Update thanks to Subprime Blogger Poster “aceiommi”

Hello everyone here is a summary of where the Unemployment Benefits Extension saga is at.  Like I said before, help is on its, way hang on…God bless America today and always!!!  ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf reports on the Partisan that is slowing an extension of unemployment insurance.  Yes, there is a reason for your déjà vu.

You might be thinking that Senators overwhelmingly supported a cloture vote regarding an extension of unemployment benefits just last week.  They did it again tonight.  Tonight (Monday Nov 02, 2009) they vote 85-2 to invoke cloture on a substitute amendment written by Senate Democrats.  Why is this taking so long?

Republicans, even though they are by and large voting in favor of cloture, say they are standing up for principle. They want votes on amendments unrelated to the bill . Democrats don’t want to vote on those amendments, which include further cutting of funding to ACORN and on making permanent an “E-verify” program to electronically check immigration status of employees.

The Senate Democrats plan would extend unemployment benefits by 20 weeks in places with the highest unemployment rates and extend benefits by 14 weeks everywhere else. With previous extensions, unemployment benefits extend more than 70 weeks in most areas. Masses of the unemployed that lost their jobs in this recession will not start losing benefits until December and beyond. But tens of thousands of Americans still run out of benefits each week.

Also included Senate Democrats proposal is an extension of an $8,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers thru homes that close by June of 2010. That credit is expanded to give people who have lived in their houses for more than five years a $6,500 tax credit for buying a new house.

There is no doubt this bill will pass. It’s just a matter of when.

Republicans could insist on 30 hours of debate on this amendment post-cloture. Then Democrats would have to file cloture on the full bill, wait a day, have a final cloture vote, wait another 30 hours and vote on the bill. That’s 60 hours and one day away.

Republicans and Democrats could always come to a unanimous consent agreement to waive the cloture votes and immediately pass the unemployment extension. But that does not currently seem likely.

So, depending on your perspective, either Republicans are holding this up because they want amendments on unrelated items or Democrats are holding it up because they won’t let Republicans have their amendments.
In any event, unemployment benefits continue to be held up. And whatever the Senate passes will have to go back to the House of Representatives for their approval.

UPDATE: We have had an amazing response to this issue!  If you would like to write an article to those in Washington as to why YOU think unemployment benefits should be extended please email them to jwojdylo@subprimeblogger.com.  If your article is free of profanity and any direct insults we will be more than happy to post it on our new site UnemployedandTrying.com and you can send the link to anyone you choose.

Not to say the same as everyone else but this is deplorable. Playing politics with people’s electric bills, mortgage, car, insurance payments, etc, etc. Typical republican nonsense, prioritizing things that mean so little while neglecting things that mean so much. They like to think of themselves as the party of morals and integrity. It took me 35 years to realize that they are nothing more than the party of ignorance and hypocracy.

Word is that there will be no help until mid December? Let it be known that this is a time when your Government let you down. I have been paying taxes continuously since 1979 and now that I and many others need help they let you twist. Too little too late for many folks.

I think they will pro-rate the checks as they have done in the past but I don’t know the provisions of this extension. Your state office would have the details.

I don’t understand why these politicians are tying in all of these other amendments onto a government benefit that will help those who really need it? Just make unemployment a standalone issue and it will get passed in two minutes. What day are they planning to pass this extension?

Thanks for staying on top of this and issuing updates as the Senate slowly crawls toward closure. My benefits ended one month ago, and I am now at a critical point where I am considering public assistance. I have sent resumes and fill applications SEVEN DAYS A WEEK for two years with NO JOB OFFERS.

This is my view point: Lets say the movie “red dawn” really happens and congress is in control of our troops. Then 90% of the country would be in the control of Russians before the passed a measure to move troops in to stop the invasion. Thank god the president is commander in chief. Congress, especially the Senate republicans cause all of the problems that we face. Why would you want to put more of them back in? You would have to be stupid.

I am back in college at 47 pursuing a degree in elementary education after losing my job in November ‘07. I, like many Americans, NEED the unemployment benefits currently being held up in Congress. I have pawned the title to my car (and will have to pay it out at an enormous interest rate or lose my car) just so I can have gas money for the next few weeks to go to school. It’s really pathetic that the government is holding up benefits because they want amendments that are not even related to unemployment. Can’t they address these separately? My friend rolled quarters, nickles and dimes for me which I took to the bank today to exchange for bills so I can pay my car insurance. I think it would be great if these people holding this up could be on the other end for a change. They would probably agree with me that this delay is ABSOLUTELY STUPID…not to mention heartless. They are also making Christmas this year look more and more grim all the time. I am just hoping and trusting God to make a way so that I have gas money to finish this semester at school…not to mention a little money to buy food.

checks will not be prorated but you will get the 20 weeks going forward according to senate dems

To the posters above they have made it very clear that the checks will not be retroactive. The benefits will begin as soon as we see this bill is signed into law but not a minute sooner. However this does not mean you aren’t eligible. From my understanding if you qualified for the last Federal Extension you will also qualify for this one. I also read somewhere about “Mid December” lets just hope this was a typo or someone who does not know what they are talking about.

Unemployment is a stop gap measure but the real issue, that the President pointed out this morning, is the creation of jobs from both the private and public sectors. When will these jobs be created. We see alot of smoke but no fire. People want to work. Yes, they want to ‘Do for their country’ but give them the tools and resources to do so….damn it!

As far as the unemployment extension, just get the damn thing signed and start creating jobs. That goes for the banks who aren’t priming the pump. The stimulus package should’ve been invested back into the public already. What the heck are they waiting for??????

i must say this has been a real eye-opener. the conclusion i have come to is that the democrats are just about the most cowardly bunch of morons on earth. sure, it’s easy to blame the republicans for this, but the democrats act as though they’re afraid to govern. they’re really pathetic and i’m not voting for them any more. as of this week. there’s a gubernatorial election in my state and i was ready to vote for the democrat. now i’m going to vote for the independent candidate. the dems have been getting away with this stuff for far too long. bunch of gutless wimps, worrying about decorum and civility while the republicans are laughing in their faces. i’m always appalled by how rotten the republicans are, but i had no idea how utterly useless the democrats were until these last few months. unbelievable.

I dont know where you guys are getting your information, there is no way this thing is going to mid December.I would bet my last can of beans it doesn’t go any later then Monday of next week,if that long. Be patient people we almost weathered this storm.

Who ever is reporting “Mid December” reveal your sources or just shut up. This can all be wrapped up in a couple of days. Benefits going forward can begin as early as next week.

  19. david
    November 2nd, 2009 @ 7:18 pm

Well, i,ve been laid off for 9 months now. I’ll get my last check this week which as how it worked out will only be less than 1/2 of a check, then i,ll be doomed.
I want to blame the republicans also, but again does everyone see what that amendment is that the republicans are wanting? Its the E-verify bill that would require employers to verify someone to see if they are illegal before hiring them. The illegals have killed jobs for years now, since 8 or 10 live in the same house and have few expenses.
Why are the democrats against passing the E-verifying bill? Because they are for the illegal immigrants obviously.
I agree that they need to put the extensions as a stand alone. How long can two senators hold this up? Damn, whats happened to majority votes?

take a look at the amendments… do your homework..
frankly i cant blame the republicans on this… the dems are holding it up… there is a reason i send a senator to washington so i can be heard as well. And yes my unemployment ran out a month ago. Do whats right for the country too!

    November 2nd, 2009 @ 7:34 pm

My husband and I are both small business owners. We work extremely hard to to provide for our family and provide jobs for our employees. I actually had someone tell me that it was better for her to collect unemployment and do nothing than to come work for me as a PT receptionist…and now they are extending unemployment benefits? Help out the small businesses (NOL carryback does little to benefit the small S corp) and this will allow us to grow and hire on the staff that we had to lay off in 2008 and 2009. Don’t give us a handout..simply reduce the tax we must pay to the government….(dare I say it??)How about reducing or temporarily eliminating the employer’s dollar for dollar match required to be paid to the IRS on all social security and medicare taxes withheld from the employees paychecks? This will save us 7.65% of the gross wages paid to our employees and will reduce the overall cost of hiring new staff. What a great idea, especially considering the much higher unemployment tax rates we are bound to see in 2010!!
I really do feel for those that are unemployed and trying to secure new employment…I know so many people in this boat. They can extend unemployment benefits for years but nothing will change until they fix the problem.

I think this website is wrong. The way it reads there still maybe 2 more cloture votes? The way I understand it they will vote on the bill after they wait 30hrs, not after 2 more cloture votes.

First off, let me say that these politicians need to have the pressure of the people in all things that they are accountable for. For starters we need have age limits and term limits associated with their positions, i.e. Senators or Congressmen, if the President of these United States has limits, I can’t comprehend why these individual are not held to the same standard.
We need to support a third party (Independents) whatever or whomever, we need people in these positions that will represent the people and be accountable to the people no matter what. They need to feel the heat or fear not being re-elected, what we currently have is an institution in place whereas, these individual do not fear the people and disregards the voice of the people as they are not listening to, WE THE PEOPLE, rather , their listening to these (special interest) groups and in the process lining their pocket with kickbacks and all other unscrupulous rewards, while the middle class folks, who are the backbone of this country and the one’s paying for everything currently, but when it’s our time to be supported they provide the old preverbal back turn. That said a lot about these old farts that are disconnected from society as it exists today, I will bet you that 80% of the individuals in these positions do not know how to use a computer, which said a lot about their judgment of today issues.
Enough about that, let address the issue of jobs. I do believe that this catastrophe would not be as critical as it currently is we would keep our job in the United States and stop this outsourcing for lower wages and higher profits, to country’s that may or may not be associated with terrorism. It’s funny, I work in the IT industry and been on 8 or so interviews in the last 3 month, I noticed that in the job descriptions it indicates “Communicates effectively”, now I worked in this environment for about 10 years and more and more I have be working with foreigner , that I can’t for the life of me understand, however, they seems to communicate effectively, I don’t think so, when I have to schedule someone else for a private meeting just to understand what is being said, that’s not effective communication, that’s call a cultural difference and the bottom line it JOBS….plain and simple.
So, if someone can explain to me that our situation would not be as grim, if we were to keep our jobs in America for Americans that would be greatly appreciated.

we currently have 3 extensions in place. If another is passed, the wages necessary to validate a claim will no longer be in the base period used to calculate benefits. None of those who have exhausted all extensions will be able to validate a claim becasue they will have already used all reported wages. By adding extension after extension we are setting ourselves up for an economical implosion. If the gov’t would follow up on job contacts and claimant responsibilities they would find a huge amount of deceit and laziness that is robbing ligitimate, honest ppl of the aid they deserve. At some point extensions will end. Our gov’t had better be finding ways to get us back to work instead of ways to pay for us being out.

My family has been homeless since Oct 14th. We used the last of our cash to pay for hotel rooms and now are luckily being put up by a friend in his apartment. It is hard for my wife, 3 kids, friend, his daughter and myself to be in a 2 bedroom apt….I have contacted every news station in Albany NY and NO ONE wants to even report on the issue of unemployment. I have been told to “just get a job and stop being a deadbeat dad”… How heartless can people be? I just do not understand how the senate can allow voters to suffer in this manner. I can honestly say… I would not vote for a single one of the current senators if they came up for reelection. They would have a better chance running with the bulls! I am outraged that I have to put my children through this!

I believe what the person stating about mid-December, is that we won’t have cash in hand until then. I’ve received an extension before after benefits ran out and it took a while before the money trickled down to the states.

  37. david
    November 2nd, 2009 @ 8:57 pm

    jen k,
You are wrong about that. The extensions are based on your last claim amount. I do agree however, that if we get a job and work a couple of months then get laid off again, by having to file a new claim we will be screwed because like you said, there won’t be anything there.

  38. david
    November 2nd, 2009 @ 9:00 pm

I should have said work maybe 6 months then get laid off again there wouldn’t be anything there. I think if you got laid off again during the extension period you could still draw

The article about the “Mid December” statement was in a Bloomberg report, speaking on behalf of the Michigan Unemployment office. What they said was IF they can get this all through the senate, back through the House and to Obama by Friday, people will start receiving their payments by “Mid December”. Some states will be quicker, some slower. It depends on each state and how well they are equipped to handle the claims. Here in Vegas, the Unemployment office has extended their hours and are even open on Saturdays. Each state will be different and NO retroactive pay in any state.

Information in your blog is incorrect and you need to correct it so people don’t freak needlessly. This cloture vote was the final one. It was on the amended bill. The 30 hour clock started around 5:30 p.m. ET. This means that after 30 hours the bill will be voted up or down. No more procedural delays can be raised by Republican haters of working people.

To All, the following is not whining. It is a snippet of what I emailed my senators to let them know what a hot button issue the UI extension is.

After 22 years with the same company, I was downsized at the end of last year. My UI benfits total $10K and ran out after 6 mos at the max rate (roughly $10/hr). Although our governor vetoed extended UI benefits from Washington, I did qualify for an aditional 20 weeks, which will run out this month (Nov). I’ll admit that, after working full time for almost 30 years, and given the fact that I got a package, I took a couple of months off for the first time in my life and worked around the house and took a couple of trips. But I started looking in April and looking hard in May. I’ve put in 20+ resumes a week since (mostly out of town). I’ve been a department head. I’ve held full P&L responsibility. I’m willing to work for 30% of what I was making. It doesn’t seem to matter. Local companies are looking for two things – medical (I don’t have the certs and would be living on the streets before I could get them) or they pay $9/hr. Since I’m already draining my already depleated 401K at the $10/hr I’m getting on unemployment, anything less is out of the question. Out of town jobs won’t look at me because I’m not local. I read an article in today’s paper that there were roughly 4.5 million jobs available at end of October and roughly 14.5 million unemployed. If all of the open jobs were filled tomorrow, what would happen to the other 10 million people? Pass the UI emergency extension. Pass it today.

  42. david
    November 2nd, 2009 @ 10:02 pm

But what if your last extension is just now running out? mine is out this week. Guess i,ll know what it tells me on my check stub when i get it.

  43. Mark
    November 2nd, 2009 @ 10:21 pm

    First,

It is politics people…pure and simple. I support neither side because neither side is after my best interests. Should the Republicans have an issue with just getting it passed….NO. Should the Dems have an issue with doing what is right and putting a LEGAL person verification process in place…NO. It is just redundant stupidity which is in no form or fashion connected to our interests.

    Second,

I am sorry that so many depend upon the people who caused this issue to start with. Truthfully out of this I hope you all learn the government is in the pocket of high-dollar Lobbies and have no connection to the people. This will not change as long as we allow it to happen. Served for 15 years and in 2 wars for this country and it is now in the hands of the enemy.

    Finally,

Here is my summary of all benifits INCLUDING this bill after it passes:

    Step 1…State
IL has 26 weeks of starting unemployment.

    Step 2….EB1
    20 weeks for all

    Step 3…EB 2
    13 weeks for all

    Step 4 …(to be passed)
14 or 20 weeks (20 for IL) for all

    Step 5…State EB
    20 Weeks for IL

In my experience there is a 2 week gap and retro pay between each of the above section. Filing is automatic into the next group by the local office unless they tell you otherwise BUT WATCH THEM> We all now know this newest will not be retroactive. This will equal 99 weeks of unemployment..wow..three weeks shy of 2 years. I am on week 38 with a MBA and several high IT certifications…it is not looking good out there but I am getting a few good interviews and am on hold till Q1.

    Good Luck to ALLLLL!

  44. Albert
    November 2nd, 2009 @ 10:34 pm

I am fed up with both parties, the hold up is add ons from both dems and repubs. Call your senator and tell him or her to make this a single issue bill, as I understand it the moment it is sighned into law it becomes effective.

  45. Lisa
    November 2nd, 2009 @ 11:08 pm

God… I hope we don’t have to wait until mid-December to get our first unemployment check, by then my car will be repo, I already lost my apartment, and had my car insurance cancelled, and down to my last penny, I pray the we will get it sooner and hope that I can get a job soon.

  46. Lynn

When my house is in it’s final stage of foreclosure will I also get a Wall Street Bail Out? Or how about this, maybe you could ask my creditors to restore what was excelent credit my entire 52 years of life! Huh? Will that work for you? If not maybe you could send me some McDonalds coupons so that my family won’t starve, because my husband who makes less then 30k per year disqualifies us for food stamps; and seeing as I was the bread winner of the family and now can’t even collect unemployment or better yet, GET A FREAKING JOB, our pickings at the dinner table are slim to none. THANK YOU GOP!

  47. Victoria
    November 3rd, 2009 @ 4:33 am

These despicable politicians care nothing at all for the people or this country to let this go on for so long. Let’s just cancel Thanksgiving and Christmas. And forget about Black Friday. Those who still have money to spend should boycott the stores except for food and absolute necessities. Of course that will be no problem for those with nothing. Let the members of congress live thru the winter with no food, electricity or heat.

  48. Johnnyboy
    November 3rd, 2009 @ 4:42 am

This could be over before Thanksgiving and the legislation s wording will determine if those of us who have exhuasted are benefits before its signed if we can still get the extension or not. But let it be known that no matter what they will not pay retro, but will pay it going forward as soon as it is signed. So will not lose anything but wont get a fat lump payment. So lets all star calling our Senators Washington offices and give tgem a tongue lashing for the Delays. I also saw somewhere that it will only take another 30 hrs. after this last vote.

  49. Anita
    November 3rd, 2009 @ 5:29 am

Stop holding up unemployment, we need the money ASAP. Why hold up unemployment for something that is insignificant when people are losing their jobs everyday and money is needed. The holiday’s is approaching and they are still trying to make a decision when it did not take them this long to make a decision about the banks and the car dealers. Why waste time on the American workers. We need the funds to get the economy moving again. We need the funds to pay bills and to take care of our families. Don’t they think we are looking for jobs. Give us a fair chance and we will make it work. They just don’t see what they are doing to the American people. I have exhausted my extension since September and have nothing coming in. I have been working 15 hours and it is not enough to put food or pay my rent. I have tried every agency and they are running out of money also. So what are we to do? They just don’t get it. The unemployment will help us keep going until the more jobs are created. We need help with the unemployment insurance and stop debating.

I have been unemployed since Jan. 2008 I believe there have been 3 extensions since then and i have qualified, will i qualify for this new extension? Even if the state i am unemployed from is below 8% unemployment rate? For all who are concerned about a gap from when their benefits run out to when the extension begins, in some cases there was no gap..when my benefits had already run out and were waiting for another extension as soon as it was passed, i had a check within a week. Good luck everyone!!

I hate to rain on the parade of those waiting, myself included, but the senate is off Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week. That means 30 hours from yesterdays cloture vote at 5:30 will push the bill floor vote to next week. Also, I believe the republicans could push for another cloture vote somehow which would put it out an additional 30 hours before the vote. And don’t forget it must then go back to the house for aproval before it hits the presidents desk. Don’t think that will happen with the additional ammendments. Isn’t congress planning on a weeks vacation this month? It seems to me that our gov. is setting up this once great country for a position on the global outsouceing market. I’m not looking forward to the day where our hourly wage equals that of India. How could we compete? They have as many if not more honnor students,
    than we have children.

Well how easy is it for Republicans to get their consituenty to vote & be against their own self interests! The republican E-verify holdup issue is contrived for political reasons because a 3 year extension for it until 2012 is already passed & on the books. The ACORN issue is likewise. All funding has been cut off after the “pimp & Ho” scandal.
Ask yourself do u really think those issues are worth personal and macroeconomic collaspe? How sad it is for my fellow americans to hold a misinformed political position over people that are just like them in most ways and are the backbone of the contry

This is most deplorable. I don’t know why the Senate is holding this up. If they were unemployed, they would know how this feels. Also the extensions never got held up in the past so why now with everyone’s current extensions running out. I’m glad I at least have a part time job but what about those who don’t have anything? We all really need this extension to happen and happen soon.

I am one of those that had to name 3 places a week I looked for work: name, address, contact, results, etc. Now, after the last 20 weeks and hundreds contacts later, I am running out of places to apply. I can’t look for work 100 miles from home, I couldn’t afford to drive. I’ve been unemployed almost 2 years and I need this unemployment extension until something breaks. I would much rather have a job so I can pay my bills but I honestly don’t see that happening. This is a very small town with everyone else pounding the sidewalks and burning up the phone lines too. For anyone to suggest that the extension might make people lazy, is just nuts. People are hurting. No one wants to get in line for food stamps or handouts but survival is priority right now.

my unemployment ran out oct. 3rd. i am a journeyman millwright 2 years ago there were 3 columns of jobs i could apply for now i have not had 1 job to even apply for in 6 weeks. they need to pass this extension. but also they need to get illegal immigrants out of the work force. so i am all for electronic checking of legal status. the Democrats and republicans are both nothing more than idiots. it their fault this situation is getting worse. they both need to come together and do what it takes to save the jobs we have left for the people that are legally entitled to hold them.

I don’t care about those issue’s call me selfish or whatever, I have kids to feed and that’s my problem, if I don’t pay my bills the gas and electricity gets cut, if I don’t pay our rent we’re homeless yet I must feed them on peanuts literally it’s not a lol matter. I have been out of benefits since September, my spouse works hard but we’re running very low, there is no government assistance or wic programs for middle class yet we feel like we should be in a lower bracket because after pay taxes and medical benefit deductions from his pay we have nothing left after paying bills, there are no credit card debt or things like that, I wish the government would cut the crap and just pass one bill already without the other crap attached to it. This is childish and they will have to answer to God for this nonsense. I hate both sides and this is why people don’t vote. Hopefully those higher up than the senators can straighten them out. I’m really sick of this and disgusted. This is soo personal. Complete nonsense. I pray none of my children get involved in politics it’s such a dirty game. To me they’re dirtier than the drug dealers and mafiosos!

This is a list of the senators who have continued to attach unrelated amendments so keep this legislation stalled. You can count on this same group of Senators doing the same thing on Healthcare Reform and Financial Regulation. The only card they have now is obstructism. No doubt they have never gone without. THEY ALL HAVE EMAIL: LET THEM KNOW THIS WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN.
    Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) [6.8%]
    Sen. Christopher Bond (R-MO) [9.5%]
    Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) [10.9%]
    Sen. Thomas Coburn (R-OK) [6.7%]
    Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) [8.2%]
    Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) [11.6%]
    Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY) [6.8%]
    Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) [11.6%]
    Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) [6.2%]
    Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK)[6.7%]
    Sen. Jefferson Sessions (R-AL) [10.7%]
    Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) [7.4%]
    Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) [9.2%]
Minority leaders Mitch McConnell and John Boehner are also constantly taking exception to all measures to help the people their policies have desimated. They love emails from other constituencies. Their staffs especially love mail from other states. So if you have a computer and all this time…

Let’s Hope they all get their heads out of their you know whats soon…. I am really surprised Obama has not made it a priority to get this pass. Where is his leadership on this issue? Instead of flying to where ever to try to get the Olympics. He could and should be putting pressure on the Leaders of the house to push this through.I think both parties are stalling till the elections today pass.(Just think of all the people that have fallen off the unemployment rolls and are no longer counted. What happens to the number when ass these people are put back on?) I just hope they get this passed and wrapped up by the 11th. He is going to Asia for nine days. I don’t know if he will sign a bill overseas. Good luck to everyone. my next question is god forbid we burn through this extension, what next?

I think what the Senate Republicans are doing with bill is deplorable. They are taking their good old time, while we lose our houses, can’t eat. We are losing our dignity. They ( the Senate ) are making so much money and getting a raise on top of it and they have the best health care. I will tell you now when it comes time for the election, I’ll remember what they did with this bill and they will be voted out of office. I live in an area where we have 1 Republican who is holding this up. I hope all of these Senators remember Election time because WE THE PEOPLE WON’T FORGET!

PEOPLE WAKE UP! WE ARE BEING DUPED BY OUR OWN GOVERNMENT.

Let me see if I can explain this correctly. Our GOVT pass a 800 billion tarp bill to help out the so called BANKS to big to FAIL. Yet this same GOVT cant pass a 1 Billion dollar unemployment bill for the little guy to small to be irrelevant. In the meantime they are eating steaks and caviar. We are eating tuna fish if you can still afford a can with crackers if your fortunate enough.

This good ole USA, is nothing but a sham… In the meantime, JOBS ARE STILL BEING SHIFTED OVERSEAS. While our young troops are being sent back home in caskets.

My unemployment benefits ended last week. I have been unemployed since June 08. I have 2 children in college and 1 graduating high school this year. I wish the republicans could live in my shoes for a week! I hope mid December is not when we can expect help from OUR government! Not to mention the fact that they want us to look for jobs! Yeah right! I’ve sent my resume out at least 30 times per week if not more. I’ve applied for jobs in other states. I guess if we want help we all need to move overseas. That’s where all the money and the jobs are sent anyway!!!

    To Whom It May Concern:

Like many that have posted there concerns related to the passage of the unemployment extension. I’m appalled at the Republican party playing politics while unemployed citizens
of the United States Of America are suffering.

This is absolutely inexcusable behavior of the Republican Party placing unrelated agenda’s in front of unemployed citizens that are greatly suffering and need financial assistance now.

I don’t see how this level of behavior is honoring their oaths when they were sworn in to represent their districts honorably.

Now seeing I have just run out my unemployment and the GOP is holding down us poor people who cannot find work. They act like collecting unemployment is lucrative! I have had companies tell me, they get more calls from people looking for employment than they do from their customers. I just recycled my list from when I first started. I don’t know where to go from here. And now, due to a test that came back positive, the medical bills are starting to pile up. I still love this country and I know things will get better but when and at what cost. I wish John Boehner and Mitch McConnell would come to Michigan and live for one month in a home where both parents have lost their job and have small children. And leave their checkbooks back in Washington. Walk for one month in the shoes of this Michigander.

This isn’t a Republican or Democrat issue, it’s a human issue. People are suicidal over the fact that they have lost their jobs, their savings and their dignity. It’s disgusting that this country continues to allow it’s politicians to dicker over unrelated issues when everyone agrees that extending unemployment benefits is the right thing to do. Call your Senator today. Stop moaning on web boards and take action. Fifty phone calls from the public will seem like a national crisis to them.

These are scary times. I was laid off Jan 08, and after eight months I found work but only for a little less than two months. I belong to the Laborers union and to get my last job I gave up my # 131 on the a-list. Now that I’m unemployed again my new # is 711, which makes my chances super slim of getting something new. In my life I’ve been to other countries where the infrastructure broke down because of corruption. Things are beginning here as well to break down and many of the social services are being eliminated. It doesn’t matter if you vote Dem or Rep or independent, humans while having good intentions are also greedy, and this apparent delay in getting this newest extension passed is a great example of that.

Hello Republicans in Government. Pass the bill for the unemployment extension. My extension ran out 6 weeks ago and I cannot afford to get repairs done to my car, which means that I cannot look for work. See how this all works together. Republicans are already receiving paychecks and they don’t care if some of us won’t be able to afford to have a Thanksgiving dinner. It is ridiculous how they play with people’s lives. I certainly will not vote Republican again! They are only looking out for themselves and NOT the people. Please everyone, call and write your Senator and tell them to put people first and not their own agenda.

I watched CSPAN yesterday waiting for this bill to pass and could not believe all the standing around, seeming to do nothing. I am in the same boat as all of you. I worked for one company for 25 years and missed only 3 days of work during that time. The place closed and due to my age, (I believe, 61), I have not found work. I think these companies need to be penalized for all the jobs sent overseas. Maybe then they would bring their factories back to the US and employ some Americans. Thats how we get our jobs back!!

    November 3rd, 2009 @ 1:58 pm

Wow. Its hard to see so many people suffering and it is not very motivating to hear how high the unemployment numbers are and how few jobs we still have out there right now.

My Husband lost his job at the very beginning of 09. Since then he has enlisted in the Army National Guard (for the first time at the age of 36), went through both basic and AIT training and has been home for almost 5 months now….looking aimlessly for a job. His first 26 weeks of unemployment ends on 11/17. From this article I gather he will be ok to get the extension since he has only gotten his initial 26 weeks so far. Lucky for us he was paid wages while he was at basic training so we did not have to exhaust his unemployment during those months.

His background is in construction, he worked as a supervisor for a home builder…so obviously he needs to find a new field. He is planning to start school that the military pays for this coming January….he is continuing to look for work but so far he has only been called for one interview and nothing has resulted at this point.

This is so scary because we have always struggled….but we have also ALWAYS paid our bills….one way or another we have gotten by. Thank God he joined the military or we would not have survived this. We would have had no medical benefits…now because he joined we do have benefits and its a good thing because one of our children broke an arm and had to have surgery….over 13k it would have cost…not to mention visits after the operation….it goes on and on.

Everyone keeps talking about the help thats out there for homeowners so you won’t lose your home….well let me tell you for 8 mos we tried to get a modification done to lower our payment…but because we were not currently behind and because we did not show a POSITIVE cash flow at the end of the month we could not qualify! If we had a POSITIVE cash flow at the end of the month we would not need help! Red Tape…thats all it is.

I am back in school at 45 pursuing a degree in Business Administration. The company that I was working for outsourced to Mexico and made me a displaced worker. I have been in school for 2 years now and I am almost finished. I have recently lost my unemployment benefits and don’t know how I will finish out this semester with no money to pay bills. I had 620 left in my account and they stopped the benefit because my ending date was October 10, 2009. I was expecting this money to finish out this semester and then arrange my last semester around a job. I hope now that I can find a job that I can work around school. I am glad that this benefit helped me, but at least it could of helped me through to the end.

  86. mike
    November 3rd, 2009 @ 2:16 pm

Unemployment is the highest it’s been in three decades. The housing mortgage fiasco has contributed to the dramatic growth of homelessness. Tent cities across the United States are growing and are populated not only by the chronically homeless but also with educated and middle class citizens who have lost their jobs and/or lost their homes.

The number of homeless veterans is growing, too, with 200,000 currently “on the streets.” As the incidence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is growing in recognition, treatment is not keeping up with the need. When these walking wounded return home from Iraq and Afghanistan, the stigma associated with PTSD as well as the lack of compassionate and therapeutic care abandons them to find their own way down a hopeless street. Many commit suicide. Others join the chronically homeless.

Reminiscent of the Great Depression and the era following the Vietnam War, the stories of America’s middle and working class and its returning veterans are resurfacing as exercises in frustration and defeat although the heart of America still beats with hope.

In addition to everything that has been talked about throughout these comments….people w/o jobs, benefits running out, loss of homes, etc. etc. Another thing I have to wonder about in addition to the unemployment rate in this country right now….what are the current statistics and how do they compare to statistics in the past for alcoholism (if anyone can afford it), divorce, and suicide. These are tough circumstances for all, going from losing a job to losing a home….its hard on a marriage and can eventually take a toll on one self worth and mental stability.
At least I know that if my husband does not find work eventually and worse case scenario we lose our home and everything we own, we have family and friends that would take us in, we might end up homeless, but not on the streets and that means a lot seeing how a lot of people don’t have that.

I’m sure this bill will be signed next week by President Obama. Republicans and Democrats both need to stop waiting around and get off their high horse. It’s not about them, but completely about Americans that are suffering. If we can fight wars, we can feed the poor. STOP THE BS!!!

  93. Jane
    November 3rd, 2009 @ 6:05 pm

These politicians simply do not care. The longer they drag this out, the less they pay out in federal benefits and the more that’s left for them to give themselves pay raises. What they fail to realize is that people with no money, can’t spend money, therefore they can’t pay taxes either. They can always put you in jail for not paying, but once you’ve lost your home, your car and have nothing left, there’s nothing left for them to take. Landlords will have homes sitting empty, banks will have homes sitting empty, businesses who thrive on people being able to spend will go under, therefore there will be less jobs, and idiots in D.C. will freak out because the tax revenues they were counting on aren’t met so they will raise taxes more and people who actually do have money will gripe and blame the “non-contributors”. It’s a bad situation. You can’t contribute if you’ve lost everything.
This is supposed to be the land of prosperity. No one truly likes scrimping and juggling and doing without. We all want the Norman Rockwell happy life. Fewer and fewer of us have any hope of ever being able to even work toward that type of beautiful image. Those who go to sleep with warm houses and full bellies don’t care about the ones who don’t until and unless it affects them personally.

If you watch them live on CSPAN (yes, thankfully I still have cable for this month anyway), you can see why they don’t move forward on anything. If I had worked in that manner, i.e. all talk and no action, I would have been fired! Hope this passes for everyones sake,BUT everyone seems to be focusing on the senate vote. This bill has to be approved by the HOUSE next,,and they did not want this extension nationwide,,only for states over 8.5%.

Even though the original vote back in sept was a landslide,You are now adding 25 more states into the new bill,,which the HOUSE might not agree with,,so think big,,but just remember this could be voted against at the next level,,just leaving the original bill intact,,only states over 8.5 would recieve anything

I hope and pray for you all,,would not like to be almost homeless, with this squabbling that is going on in the senate right now,,ALSO one more thing OBAMA should have showed his face during these past 3 weeks, instead of focusing on hid healthcare baby

Get the facts straight on this unemployment bill. Both parties are for the extension, Democrats for 14 weeks and Republicans worked for 20 weeks. Also, it was the Republicans that fought for $8k new home buyers, not the Democrates…that agreed on $6500. Yes both parties want this bill but the parties can not keep spending without any thought…Congress in the past, used to think thru issues and than retroact, if needed, when approved.

I would like to add my voice to the thousands that are out there that
need an extension of unemployment benefits. I have worked
continuously for 40 years until 2008. I have made money for companies
and agencies that I worked for that in turn contributed to the
unemployment funds. This is in addition to the taxes I paid
personally and the cash flow my efforts helped put into the economy.

I am no different than every other working American, I don’t want a
handout, but I feel that I have done my part and that myself and
millions of others need this help at this time. The economy appears
to be turning around, I desperately want to be a part of that
turnaround. I am feverishly looking for work. In our state the
unemployment office job service lists over a half million registered
out of work individuals and only approximately 12,000 open positions.
Couple that with the fact that I am an over 50 white male and the
numbers are working against me, even though my track record and
experience show that I am a very productive employee.

Congressman, Senators, we need your help. We greatly appreciate your
efforts and understand that the billions in bailouts for banks and
insurance companies were needed to help bolster the economy. But we
need your help too, and the small amount we get per week helps us pay
our utilities and keep our houses.

Please pass the Unemployment Benefits Extension as soon as possible.
I personally will be out on the street in a month.

Dave V. You need to get your facts straight I’m sick of you people running your mouth’s and dont know whats really going on! people keep posting inaccurate information that’s gonna make someone snap. These are desperate times, and people do desperate things, and your inaccurate information might just be enough to push someone over the edge. The senate is not on vacation till next week, they just voted today I cant remember off hand it was either 97 or 98 yea and 1 against it needs to get voted on one more time then it gets signed. Everyone do your own research go watch c-span or go to opencongress.com just dont listen to these people who go by what their neighbor or friend tell them, because they dont know either!

My unemployment benefits were exhausted last week. I can not hold on until mid December for another check. My car will be repo’d and there will be no food. My 25 year old son who lives with me (he has Down Syndrome) receives a monthly check from disability for 674.00. This will be our only income. Who can live off that? Rent, gas, food, electricity, etc. With no car,how will I continue to seek a job? I have applied everywhere and ask everyone i see about any openings. I worked for 22 years at the same place as a medical office manager. I see no light at the end of my tunnel. Good luck to all the unemployed out there, I am praying for us all.

Both parties need a reality check. I’m an Obama supporting conservative, but both parties are so out of touch its terrifying. The new house credit as a case in point, lets get people into houses by offering them an incentive to take the plunge, interesting, as I recall, a similar gov’t idea go us into this mess.

And extending benefits, what forever? Anyone that says they have been looking for work for years to no avail, might want to lower the bar. Around here, guys go form making 30-40 dollars an hour working a plant job and won’t even look at a job that pays less than 20, as if by some miracle, UI benefits are better than the lower paying job.

This country, its leaders and citizens, need to grow up.

Then again, I’d be more likely to agree with either of the tax credit if it had some provision for people who have bought their houses using common sense and buying only what they can afford. For the record, I have taken use of the UI benefits, so I’m thankful for them in theory, but extending them forever is expensive and will train the state’s reserve accounts fully before federal money can be used. Don’t worry, Uncle Sam will be happy to step in and take over yet another state program.

And while I’m here, everyone we know laughs at us when we tell them our household budget is based on two full time minimum wage jobs. They laughed less when we told them we had managed to save up six months total bills and are approaching a full year.

I try not to laugh when I see people with giant SUV’s and lavish houses losing it all because they lived well beyond their means.

But at the same time, it kills me to watch good people, saving people, frugal people, pushed to their limits the current state of the economy. I know my situation is just as much grace as it is planning, so I’m thankful, but at the same time, if you guys are losing your houses this quickly, maybe you had too much house to begin with.

Good news, though, the housing market is down so far in most areas, you could just move there and save money, :)

Ok, maybe thats not good news.. .my neighborhood could easily go that way, :(

I called my local Employment Security Commission yesterday and the employees are hoping this bill is passed before the thanksgiving holiday. My benefits ended in July and without this extention, I don’t know how much longer I can continue to hold off on the mortgage and car payment. Chase Home Finance has explained to me, that there is nothing they can do, so what now. I can’t move because I dont have an income – - This tax income rebate for cars and homes are worthless. What about my no income rebate??????

It’s easy for idiots to say that we are trying to get a hand out! Well i’s not a hand out, a welfare check or anything to that nature! Is it a handout or welfare check when money is sent overseas to build another country? We need help and the situation is getting worse. TN is a clueless state!!!! How are we to support our country and we don’t get the same treatment? I’ve lost my home and today my utilities were on the cutoff list. I had to stand in the assistance line to get my bill paid. Let’s not mention how we are degraded by those whom are just one paycheck away from being on the same side of the desk as me!!!!!! I have 30 days to find a box (I guess) with wiring to move in with my kids. Thanks Dept of Labor for dragging your feet. You are the hold up now! 3 cheers for the good old USA! Whatever!!!

    2009 UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSION

    Here’s whats really happening…. 11/13/09

I’m afraid my friends ( Fellow Americans) that the government is going to lean once again on the side of corporations, by not providing assistance to millions of Americans before Thanksgiving… Yes the Senate both Democrats & Rebuplicans stalled passing the 2009 UE (Unemployment Extension) so they could have millions exhuast benefits for months so they could then come out and say that unemployment cliams are down to insinuate that thier administration (Government) is headed in the right direction but its all a lie. Unemployment claims are down only because Millions are out of benefits now more than ever before in history. Now that they have those digits….the next step will be to have a big christmas, economically speaking. Although the bill has passed and is LAW, they will now stall the claim process in hopes of engineering a big christmas, economically speaking!

This is how they will do it:

In states like Florida with high unemployment – people will begin recieving letters in the mail starting Dec. 1st to notify them if they are eligible for the 2009 UE. On or before Tuesday, Dec.15th people may be allowed to claim for all the retro weeks available. And finally on Friday Dec. 18th people may recieve there funds.

Keep in mind this is an intelligent forcast using quality resources of how things may go down but it may happen much sooner or alot differently.

All i know… Is that people need to speak out …. They don’t care if you have thanksgiving dinner or not … All they wants is to give you a lump some right before christmas so christmas sales are high so they can say that the economy is making progress, people are getting jobs …
When in reality its really getting worst and worst a worst everyday….

AN ADMINISTRATION THAT ENGINEERS MUCH MORE THAN JUST AN UNEMPLOYMENT MEDIA BLACKOUT AND THAT DOESN’T CARE ABOUT THANKSGIVING DINNERS IS NOT GOOD ADMINISTRATION BY ANY STRETCH!!!!!!!!!!
