The first time home buyer tax credit extension has been extremely popular in the media and with potential first time home buyers. When the news first broke of the potential extension we created a poll on Subprime Blogger. We have received over 3000 votes with a significant majority strongly in favor in the extension or possible expansion of the tax credit.
We have seen great interest in the idea of an extension of the tax credit on Subprime Blogger. We would like to thank all the readers who have read and responded to our articles. The goal is to get 10,000 votes in favor of an extension and possible expansion of the tax credit. If we get enough votes we can take this to government officials and let them know how the public feels. If you would like to help please vote at the following poll:
First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit Extension Poll.
Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd supported the extension on Tuesday. The Connecticut Democrat agrees with Senator Johnny Isakson in that there should be an extension through June and should be expanded to all home buyers. Senator Dodd stated, “The credit is set to expire in five weeks. But the work of stabilizing the housing market won’t be done. We still need to use every tool at our disposal to try and fix this problem.”

If this $8000 tax credit doesn’t continue, it will go just like the “Cash for Clunkers” program went: rocket up, followed by a crash.

The tax credit is great for home buyers, but don’t rush into this major decision just to take advantage of the credit! Make sure your can afford and are willing to take on the responsibility of home ownership. The expenses and work will remain long after the effects of the tax credit are gone. For everything you need to know about the loan application and closing process, please see my book “Getting To Closing” (www.CherylLPeck.com).

It should be open to more buyers, not just first time home buyers. I know so many people who are stuck. They have been transfered, but can’t sell their home and are now really in a bind. If the credit is extended and expanded to allow more buyers to take advantage, these people could have a better chance to sell their homes and get out of the bind they are in.

I live in a mobile home, I do not own the property (lot), I pay rent to the landlord. I have never purchased real property, where I would own the land, if I purchased a real house, attached to the ground would I be entitled to the credit.

I plan to shop for my first home early next year. So I’d like to see the program extended for purely selfish reasons. Also, since I make more than the income limit I’d like to see that increased. I also hope it isn’t extended to all home buyers because that would dilute the effect for us first-timers.
In general, though, I’m against all these credits and subsidies like this and ‘cash-for-clunkers’. They don’t create a net gain for the economy, they just distort the market by changing people’s demand for a particular good, either shifing their time-preference or by substituting one good for another. Or the subsidy just gets factored into the price, driving it up. In the end the country as a whole is actually worse off.
So, I’m against it in principle but I’m for it because it helps me. ME! ME! ME!
