I am so frustrated. My husband lost his job, so he found a job in another state, so I quit my job and we moved. I filed for unemployment, they called me and asked me why i quit my job, i told them why, due to the loss of my husbands job and relocation to gain employment for him. When I answered the phone interview, I was confused and answered wrong. So i was denied unemployment. Since then I have filed an appeal. Which when all is clarified I a, sure that the benefits will happen. It is not that I want to sit on my ass, I am a workaholic! But since our move I cant for the life of me regain employment, due to the geographical area we have moved to. But where I really want to go is that, I received a personal email from my last employer stating some really unprofessional statements. Basically asking me to stop the appeal because they have bills to pay and poor them. And that unemployment is meant for those that get fired!Quote ” we are having a phone hearing with you and an officer for you to appeal the decision for unemployment benefits. I understand money may be tight right now and collecting unemployment may help tremendously however I wanted to make sure that you know that unemployment benefits do not come from the government, they would come from OUR pocket. Normally unemployment is granted in a case where an employee has been Fired without proper documentation by the company in which they were employed at more than the 90 day Prob. period and currently looking for work but unable to find any. And it is nothing against you in any way but the club is having a hard time getting the bills paid as well! So anyway, I just wanted to see if you knew all this and were still wanting to pursue collecting unemployment”. How should I handle this one? I feel really violated that they would write me like this. If it wasn’t them it would be another employer, going through the same thing. Is this justice? What do I do? Do I bring this up during my appeals hearing? I am not looking for a free ride, I really want my career back and doing what I have done all my life, that is “WORK. Someone, olease give me some advise.

Lisa, this is a great question and a sticky situation. The fact that you just quit obviously makes the situation different from being laid off. I am by no means saying you won’t get your benefits but this does complicate matters.

If anyone here has any advice for Lisa I would also like to hear it.

I was laid off from my last job in February of 2009. Earlier in the day, a co-worker came up to me, shook my hand, told me thanks for working with him, etc. then left. At the time, I didn’t know what to think about what had happened. Maybe the guy quit, I wasn’t sure. During my lunch hour, the plant manager came into the lunch room, and I asked him about the person who left earlier. He told me that the guy was laid off. It was also then he told me the “big cheeses” wanted to see me. I then knew what was coming, my layoff. The company did give me a generous severance package, and extended health care for 4 months after the layoff. However, I wasn’t allowed to say goodbye to anyone, as my supervisor was waiting for me after the meeting to escort me out of the building. How humiliating is that!!!
Like I’m going to steal something. Anyway, after I got home, I filed for unemployment by phone, and two weeks later started getting unemployment. Now, some 10 months of job hunting later, I am still out of work, most of my severance monies has been used, and hoping that Congress extends unemployment throughout 2010.
