I did the management internship for two years while I was in school.

I'm a teacher right now. It's still hectic, but at least I feel that I'm contributing something positive to the world. Not just helping Walgreen's shareholders.

Hope that you get your own store soon!

hahaha this is so true! Maybe we work for the same company, trust me. I wish I can afford to quit, retail management is one of the worst field ever, and if you got a college deg, you are screwing yourself over big time. If only the economy is better, than I can just walk out this crappy job. The worst part is not the customers, but the people you work with, they are either teens, or failures in life, so they don't care about you as a manager.

I am a retail manager and I have been working in retail for 12 years!!!Only if I have known this...
I can't stand the hours, I haven't gone on a vacation for years without being bothered and I can't remember the last time i spent the holidays with my family!!! I am finally looking for another career. Is time for me to move on. One thing is for sure, retail associates are one of the most unprofessional, immature, lazy and they seem to never get to work on time.

Somewhere along the way, senior management in the retail industry convinced themselves that technology was the key to success and that store level, customer facing personnel weren't revenue drivers, but a cost to be minimized. In a yesterday's NYT, there was an article about retailers now wanting to get closer to their customers. The problem is that they have so marginalized and alienated those employees that are actually closest to their customers, and in the process alienated their customers as well. Very few people really expect to have a positive experience anymore when they go into any major retailer. It's all been reduced to who has the lowest price, which on the one hand is not altogether unimportant, but, on the other hand, can never be the basis for differentiation or truly earning customer loyalty. Thank you for sharing your experience, anger and frustration. you are not alone, your feelings are shared by many.
