Over the last 12 months, all we have heard is how far in debt this country is and how we need to “bailout” financial institutes that are suffering from the subprime crisis.  The bailout decision has been made, but there are many others things we as American citizens can do to get this country out of debt.  It won’t take a year, it won’t take a decade, but over time, if we stop many of our poor spending habits, the whole country will benefit.

The United States National Debt is currently $10,622,581,587,279.55 which is approximately $35,000 per American citizen.  Only one time in the history of this country was there not a national deficit and that was during the Jacksonian era.  While it is unrealistic to think that we will ever be debt-free, we, as American citizens, do need to be conscience of spending.  We do not have control of spending by the national government, but if we, as a population, stop buying on credit and spending in excess, maybe, just maybe government officials will take notice and stop their superfluous spending.

  1. I urge you to take one day out of the week in which you do not spend ONE dollar!  If you designate a day in which you will spend no money, you will obviously have to save money that day.
  2. I also urge you to write down every single penny you spend.  Many Americans do not realize how bad we are nickle and dimed by buying a soda here and a bag of chips there.  If you write it down and check it everyday, you will realize how much you could be saving.
  3. I urge you to “cut back” on gift spending this Christmas.  I know it is an important holiday to many, but do you honestly feel if we cut back a few dollars here and there that anyone would be truly and legitimately upset?

There is enough doom and gloom in this country right now; let’s do our best to change that.  Reward yourselves for not spending money and tracking your spending.  Take the time to realize that fiscal planning is important in every adults life and research it.  There are many resources to find ways to save and manage money, please use them.  Like it has been stated, maybe, just maybe if the American citizens stop spending so much money the government will follow suit.  What are you doing to slow your personal spending?
